Presidential
Performance Wins Summer Open
The
2007 Summer Open again proved to be an outstanding
success with an excellent field of 153 men and 50
Associates contesting the two day Stableford event.
The event was again sponsored by Ron Trezise of
Godfrey Pembroke, and both the men’s and ladies
competitions were very close contests.
The
winner of the men’s 36 hole nett competition was
Collie Golf Club president Ian Stewart, with a total
of 77 points. Stewart had 38 points on the Saturday
and his solid 39 points on Sunday was enough to get
him over the line as others crumbled under pressure.
Steve Farquhar produced the round of the tournament
on Sunday with an amazing 44 points to catapult him
into second place with a total of 75 points. He beat
several others by virtue of a countback. The winner
of the gross for the two days was again Rob Hewison
of Capel with even par for the event. Collie’s
Hudson Hopewell was runner up with a total of five
over par for the two days.
The
Associates nett winner was Sandra McBride
representing Mandurah with a total of 75 points. She
narrowly defeated Gail Kime, who also played well to
record 74 points. It proved to be a good weekend for
the Kimes, as husband Alan aced the seventh hole on
Sunday and walked away with a very nice prize for
his efforts.
The
winner of the Associates 36 hole gross competition
was Belinda Wilkinson from Yokine, with the very
good total of 66 gross. Wilkinson, who plays off a
one handicap, beat Cottesloe’s Helen McAullay, who
had 50 gross.
Prizes
were given for each day with Alan Fellows of
Mandurah taking nett honours with 42 points on the
Saturday, and long time visitor Don Annear won the
gross on Saturday. Wanneroo’s Margaret Griffin,
with 36 points, won the Saturday nett for the
ladies, and Collie captain Vicki Graham claimed the
gross prize.
Sunday’s
spoils went to Digby Barrett of Kwinana winning the
nett with 42 points, and Waroona’s Mike Stirk
taking gross honours. In the Associates Zelda Meads
of Bunbury was the winner of the nett with 39
points, while Lee Renner of Yokine was the gross
winner.
The
club received many positive comments over the
weekend, and tournament director and club captain
Dean Rakich did a magnificent job in staging the
very successful weekend.
***
The
Summer Open was preceded by the traditional fourball
on the Friday sponsored by Griffin Coal. The winners
for the second year in succession were the powerful
combination of Paul Moyses and Steve Edwards. They
played very well in the windy conditions to record
47 points and narrowly beat Hugh and Eric Annandale,
who finished with 46 points. Moyses obviously put a
great deal of effort into the Friday event, as he
struggled on the weekend with the highlight being a
wonderful tee shot on the 14th hole on
the Sunday.
Others
to do well included David Broadbent and Steve
Wallace, Brian Banks and Peter Ellery, Dave
Brunswick and Tony Barker-May, Leigh Bernardi and
Chris Bliss. All of these combinations had 45
points. Broadbent was another to carry Friday’s
form into the weekend with his first nine holes on
Saturday producing a pitiful five points.
***
The
Associates played an individual Stableford
competition on the Friday, with Collie’s Shelley
Barker-May emerging victorious with 35 points, an
extremely creditable score on a very windy
afternoon.
***
Head
Scrounger Ed Riley had a day out last Thursday when
he recorded 24 points to easily win the competition.
His nearest rivals were Ashley Hollins and Peter
Gray, who both had 22 points. Eric Annandale, Alan
Banks and Bryan Simpson all played well to have 21
points, while Alan Kent and Hugh Annandale also did
well to record 20 points. Troy Sheppard, Jeff
Bebbington and Tony Barker-May were also rewarded
for their 19 points apiece. Chris Stewart took gross
honours with 36 off the stick, while Rhonda McGill
was the pick of the Associates with 19 points.
***
Jim
Tyler bounced back to form in Veterans last Tuesday
with 32 points. He had a four point buffer over
second placed Dave Brunswick. Novelties were won by
Jim Tyler, Dave Brunswick and Les McGill.
***
Keith
‘Skinny’ Russell continued his good run of late
when he was successful in taking out Leisure Day
last Tuesday. He recorded 35 points to narrowly
beat Dennis Cocker, who finished with 34 points.
***
This
is my final write up for the golf notes, and I would
like to thank all those people who provide results
each week, and hope people have enjoyed reading them
over the past eighteen months.
***
This
week sees the opening of the Summer Season with an
18 hole event sponsored by Maureen Earl, Bev Moyses,
May Hollins and Dorothy Sullivan.

Williams Wins Closing Day
There
is a saying that the cream will always rise to the
top and this proved to be the case with Graham
Williams taking out the Jim and Bev Moyses sponsored
Stableford event last Saturday. Williams, the
current B grade champion, enjoyed the relatively
benign morning conditions to post a modest total of
39 points, but surprisingly none of the afternoon
players could better that total. Taking second place
by virtue of a countback was Kevin Ireland with 38
points. Also on this score were the consistent Joe
Italiano, Barry Kononen and Noddy Moyle. Clive
Pullan, Les Udy, Garry Dawson, Greg Bell and Peter
Gray all had 37 points, while Jim Moyses, Ed Riley,
Alan Davies, Alf Sanford, George Davis and Dean
Rakich all played well to register 36 points and
receive a voucher.
A
good field of 56 players contested the event -
considering the hot conditions that prevailed in the
afternoon - and the course was rated at 71.
Novelties
were won by Peter Slater, Garry Dawson and Noddy
Moyle for nearest to pins, while Wayne Waywood,
Kevin Ireland, Dave Henderson and Graeme Miffling
took out longest first putts. Visitor Mick Worth had
the long drive down 15.
***
The
ever smiling George Davis was a popular winner of
Scroungers last Thursday. Davis recorded 20 points
to beat Mark Malatesta, Dean Rakich and Bruce Miller
in a spin. Clive Pullan, Alan Davies, Des Hebb, Neil
McDonald and John Wray all did well to have 19
points.
Novelties
were won by Keith Russell and the florist, George
Dorozenko.
61
men and five Associates contested the event, with
Betty White and Bev Moyses proving to be the best of
the ladies with 19 points.
***
Steve
Farquhar with 31 points was the victor in Veterans
last Tuesday. Jeff Bebbington took second position
with 28 points. Novelties went to Steve Farquhar,
Jim Hine , Alan Banks and Dave Brunswick.
***
Ray
Cooper played very good golf to have 39 points and
win Tuesday’s Leisure Day. Cooper has battled to
overcome the golfing demons, and his victory was a
reward for his persistence. The in form Noddy Moyle,
with 36 points, took second place.
***
The
club’s premier summer event, the Godfrey Pembroke
Summer Open, will take place this weekend. Entries
have held up well, with a field of 200 expected to
take part in the two day Stableford event. Local
players in the hunt include the talented Ash
Stewart, Garry Dawson, Steve Farquhar and Clayton
Flynn all expected to perform well for nett honours.
Stewart in particular will be keen to atone for his
efforts of a couple of years ago when he four putted
the final hole to blow his winning chance. The
battle for gross honours sees Rob Hewison, Mike
Stirk, Hudson Hopewell, Brian Peake and Warren
Colgan locked in a very interesting shootout. The
Associates competition has attracted 45 players, and
it is very hard to pick a winner in the nett
section. If pressed the local Bev Moyses always
plays well in this event, and this year could be her
year. The Associates gross will be a keen
competition between favourite Belinda Wilkinson from
Yokine, and the experienced Helen McAullay,
representing Cottesloe.
The
Summer Open will be preceded by the Griffin Fourball
which has attracted a good field of 120 players.
All
in all, with cool weather forecast, it is shaping up
that the weekend will bring some high quality golf
well worth watching.

Bronickis Blows Opposition
Away
Fred
Bronickis played outstanding golf to win
Saturday’s Stableford event. Bronickis accumulated
42 points, despite scoring only three points in his
final three holes – he greatly regretted taking
the one wood on 16 - to win by a point from club
vice captain Garry Dawson. Bronickis' round was
characterised by consistently good play, without a
bit of the luck that usually accompanies a 40 plus
score, and his playing partners reckon he deserved
at least 45 for an awesome display of the art.
Dean Rakich had 40 points,
and claimed the gross trophy with 80 off the stick.
Colin Brown, Troy Sheppard and Chris Bliss all
played well to finish with 39 points, Ron Annandale
picked up 38 points, while Ed Riley, Jeff Bebbington
and Alf Sanford rounded out the vouchers with 36
points.
Novelties
were won by Graham Williams and Jim Tyler for
nearest to pins, Garry Dawson and Ian Annandale for
longest putts, and the big hitting Daniel Tylor took
out the long drive. Tylor showed his prowess isn’t
limited to thrashing the golf ball by belting a
century in cricket the following day.
The
normally unflappable Jim Tyler proved golf can test
even the most placid people. After a woeful display
in number one bunker Tyler heaved his club into the
air. Unfortunately for him his aim was as good as
his golf, and the sand wedge landed in a tree, where
it stayed.
***
The
formidable combination of Vicki Graham and Dean
Rakich played up to expectations to win the annual
Dorsett Day last Sunday. The club’s premier mixed
event attracted the good field of 22 pairs, and
Graham and Rakich played well to record 66 nett to
win narrowly from Leta Fare and Hudson Hopewell on
66 3/8. Nancy Lynn and Brian Banks also played well
to have 69 5/8 to receive a trophy, as did Norma
Bell and George Davis for their 70 3/8. The winners
of the gross were Cara Swan and Ron Annandale with
77, from June Pike and Wayne Waywood on 84. Jan
Munday and Jeff Crowe also played well for their 85.
Best
visitors were Sandra Freestone and Ken Webber, and
novelties were won by Vicki Graham, Hudson Hopewell,
Jan Munday and Joe Italiano for nearest to pins,
with Hudson Hopewell and visitor Daniel Bioma taking
out longest putts.
***
Peter
Ellery proved that age is no barrier to good golf
when he amassed 22 points to win Scroungers last
Thursday. He won from Jeff Crowe, who also had 22
points, with Greg Moyle warming up for his annual
pilgrimage into Asia with a respectable 21 points.
Daniel Tylor, Graham Williams, Greg Martin, Jim
Moyses and Jim Hine all had 20 points, while the
consistent Phil Warburton and Alan Davies both had
19 points to claim a voucher. Novelties were won by
Ed Riley, Greg Moyle and Peter Ellery, while Nancy
Lynn was the pick of the Associates with 17 points
***
Keith
Russell continues to play well, and his 36 points
was enough to take out Leisure Day last Tuesday.
Clayton Flynn was second with a well compiled 35
points.
***
Les
Udy enjoyed a day in the sun when he had 30 points
to win Veterans by a country mile last Tuesday.
Frank Battista was second with 27 points, while
novelties went to Phil Warburton, Neil McDonald,
Frank Battista and Jeff Crowe. What a week Jeff has
had – his recent illness seems to have done him
the world of good.
***
With
the Summer Open only a week away, members who are
considering playing should get their entries in as
soon as possible.
***
This
week sees the traditional closing day sponsored by
Jim and Bev Moyses. The event is an 18 hole
Stableford, and Associates are welcome to play on
the day. The popular Eclectic and Five Point System
competitions will also finish on Saturday.

Hunter
Returns To Form
A
month after experiencing the lowest point of his
golfing life Bill Hunter returned to some semblance
of form with a win in the Greg and Clayton Bell
stroke event last Saturday. Hunter had an inglorious
Country Week, highlighted by a miserable 14 points
for the Stableford event at The Cut - where he not
only received the dreaded jacket but also had to
suffer a very long trip back to Perth on the bus.
Hunter shot 69 nett to win the A grade section while
George Davis with a 70 took out the B grade section.
Jim Moyses, who has struck a purple patch of form of
late, shot a 72 to take out the runner up trophy in
the B grade. He won on a countback from Ed Riley,
with Des Hebb a further shot away. Tom Chappell, Ray
Alp and Tony Barker-May all returned with 74, while
Jan Van Volenstee, Greg Moyle and Dave Henderson all
did well to have 75 and round out the vouchers in
the B grade.
Joe
Italiano was runner up in the A grade with 73 from
David Laird and Graham Williams with 74 each.
Williams was in cruise control with victory in his
grasp until he faltered badly over the final three
holes. Phil Warburton and Steve Farquhar both had 75
on a day when 54 players competed and the CCR was
73.
Chris
Stewart with 81 took out the gross trophy and
novelties were won by Neil McDonald, Ash Stewart and
Graham Williams for nearest to pins, John Brown and
Trevor McCormick for long putts, and the powerful
Mick Dowling belted a lazy three wood down 15 to
easily win the long drive.
On
a day where scoring was high in many instances there
was even a mouse spotted wandering around in the
clubhouse after the game.
***
Dave
Henderson had a big win in Scroungers last Thursday.
Henderson hasn’t greeted the judge for a
considerable length of time, but his score of 23
points was enough for victory over Wayne Waywood and
Ron Annandale, who both returned with 22 points. It
was also a welcome return to form by Waywood, who at
one time was one of the most accurate drivers in the
club, but has sadly lost his way of late. It has
also been a long time between drinks for the sweet
swinging Kevin Ireland, who along with the ever
consistent Dean Rakich finished with 21 points. Neil
McDonald also rated a mention with his 20 points.
Ron Annandale took out the gross with 37 off the
stick.
A
total of 44 men and six Associates played, with the
best of the Associates being Gwen Tanian and Betty
White, who both had 18 points.
***
Jeff
Crowe was the best of the 16 players who fronted up
for Veterans last Tuesday. Crowe had 29 points to
win from Peter Gray on 28 points. Gray beat Des Hebb
by virtue of a spin. Novelties went to Peter Gray
for long putts on 9 and 18 and Des Hebb for a putt
on six while Frank Battista won the nearest the pin
on four.
***
Sunday’s
Super Scroungers attracted a reasonable field,
although it was down on the previous event. This did
not stop the golfing being red hot, which matched
the playing conditions. Ed Riley did a great job in
organizing the day and a full set of results will be
published next week.
***
On
Monday Verve Energy took over the course for the
annual Masters & Blasters game, and Tony
Barker-May emerged victorious with a creditable 40
points on a day when playing conditions could be
charitably described as diabolical - with two
players down with heatstroke, and an ambulance
called to the course. Despite a woeful putting
performance which saw him miss just about every
three footer he lined up, Barker-May – motivated
by the first prize of a bottle of bourbon - kept up
his fluid level and, unusually, his long game, to
hold off Noddy Moyle by two points. Kim Metcalf won
the Blasters category, reserved for players without
an official handicap.
***
This
Sunday sees the premier mixed day on the calendar,
Dorsett Day. Golfers are urged to support this day
as sponsorship is excellent and with mild weather
forecast it promises to be a great day. There is
nomination sheet on the noticeboard.
***
This
Saturday there will be an 18 hole individual
Stableford sponsored by the quartet of Brian Banks,
Mick Pokrywka, Neil Clark and Paul Carpenter.
Scroungers is on today with Veterans next Tuesday.

Riley and Gray Storm Home For
Victory
Just
as the large lady was preparing to sing, two
Veterans in Ed Riley and Peter Gray came in with 49
points to claim victory in the Moyle, Stewarts and
Crowe fourball event last Saturday. Peter Slater and
Dean Rakich were just about to claim victory with
their excellent 48 points, but Riley and Gray, who
have always played well together, combined
beautifully to pip them by the solitary point.
Others
to feature on a day when the weather was in direct
contrast to the previous Saturday included the
combination of Bruce Miller and Ash Hollins with 46
points. Miller playing in only his second Saturday
event must have played very well to achieve that
target with the much maligned Ashley Hollins. Ash
and Chris Stewart had 44 points, while Ron Annandale
and Ken Smallwood, David Laird and Ross Brody, and
Bill Hunter and Ross Davidson, all had 43 points.
Matt Harker and Chris Bliss, Frank Battista and Neil
McDonald, and brothers David and Gerard Pullan,
rounded out the vouchers with their 42 points.
On
a day that attracted 36 pairs, with a good
contingent from Darkan and Narrogin, the sponsors
kindly donated novelties on each hole.
***
Stephen
Ireland wound back the clock to his glory days when
he was C Grade Champion, when he recorded 23 points
to take out last Thursday’s Scroungers. He had one
point to spare from Troy ‘Dog’ Sheppard, who has
played some very good golf this season. In third
place was the consistent Frank Battista with 21
points. A large group achieved 20 points including
Trevor McCormick, Clive Pullan, Dave Brunswick, Ian
Annandale, Ed Riley, Chris Stewart and Charlie
Serravite. Stewart also took the gross with 36 off
the bat. Novelties went to John Mumme, Frank
Battista and Bill Hunter. On a day when 57 men and
six Associates played, Rhonda McGill with 18 points
was the best of the Associates from Betty White on
15 points.
***
Dale
Miffling’s birdie on seven isn’t a rare feat but
the way he achieved it certainly is one for the
record books. Miffling hit driver, driver for his
two shots.
***
The
Veterans played a two man Ambrose last Tuesday, with
Des Hebb and Jim Moyses emerging as victors with 39½. Hugh Annandale and Dave
Henderson had 41 to take second place, with Ernie
Sullivan and Bryan Simpson third with 41½.
Novelties went to Peter Gray, John Wray, Les Udy and
Jeff Bebbington.
***
Keith
‘Skinny’ Russell easily took out Leisure Day
with 41 points last Tuesday. He won from Clayton
Flynn and Danny Cheng, who both finished with 34
points.
***
Club
President Ian Stewart and partner Colin Brown were
the winners of last weeks Griffin-Wesfarmers Day.
What made their victory more impressive is they not
only had to overcome the course, but they also
played with ‘Mr Etiquette’ Ray Cooper.
***
Last
Monday saw the club host the South West Veterans
with an excellent turn out of 140 starters. Full
results will be published next week.
***
This
Saturday sees a stroke round sponsored by Greg and
Clayton Bell. Scroungers is on today with Veterans
and Leisure Day next Tuesday.
This
Sunday sees Super Scroungers with plenty of prizes
and novelties on offer. Hit offs are anytime during
the day. The following Sunday is Dorsett Day with an
entry sheet on the noticeboard.

Bernardi
Takes Par Event
Leigh
Bernardi shone out last Saturday, on a day when
polar bears would have been happy with the weather.
Bernardi had the excellent score of plus 2 to win
from the consistent Trizzy Lawrence who finished
with plus 1. These two players were the only ones to
finish in the positives in the relatively small
field of 37, due to the weather and other events
held on the day. Steve Edwards took third place on a
countback from George Davis, Peter Gray and Bob’s
elder brother Peter Ellery. George Davis did well to
recover from the disappointment of being rejected by
his regular Saturday playing partner. All of these
players finished with square. Ian Stewart and Gerard
Pullan both had minus 1 while Jeff Bebbington and
Graeme Miffling cracked a mention for their 2 down.
Hudson Hopewell took out the gross trophy on a day
when the sponsors Peter Slater and Brett Duffield
generously also gave 18 novelties.
Possibly
a little disappointing was the withdrawal of the
sponsors with three holes remaining. Maybe the boys
were saving themselves for the after game
celebrations that carried on long into the night.
Trizzy
Lawrence took out the fashions in the field award
with his eye catching denim number. Many commented
of his striking resemblance to a well known
underworld figure.
***
Paul
Moyses looks like timing his run to perfection again
this year, as he played scintillating golf to return
with 23 points and easily win Scroungers last
Thursday. Head Scrounger Ed Riley also played very
well to finish with 21 points and take out second
position. Phil Warburton and the in-form Jeff
Bebbington both had 20 points, while Ron Annandale,
Ross Brody, Daniel Tylor, Graham Williams and David
Broadbent all had 19 points to receive a voucher.
Novelties were won by John Brown, Steve Wallace and
Dick Earl. Paul Moyses with 40 off the stick took
out the gross. 54 men and five Associates took part
in the event, with Gwen Tanian taking out the
Associates section with an excellent 20 points from
Rhonda McGill on 17 points.
***
Ian
Annandale displayed a return to form after a woeful
Country Week to win Leisure Day with 34 points.
Clayton Flynn, Bruce Roberts and David Laird all had
33 points.
***
Ed
Riley had 28 points to win Veterans last Tuesday. He
won from Alan Davidson, 27 points, with Les Udy and
Peter Gray also playing well to finish with 26
points apiece. A field of 15 players took part in
the event, with Peter Gray claiming three of the
four novelties and Dave Brunswick picking up the
other one.
***
The
annual Griffin-Wesfarmers Day last Sunday again
attracted a very good field and with some high
standard golf mixed with a great deal of low
standard on display.
***
Entry
forms for the premier events of the summer season,
the Griffin Fourball and the Godfrey Pembroke Summer
Open are available in the clubhouse. These events
attract large fields and members are urged to get
their entry forms in early.
***
This
Saturday will see a fourball Stableford event for
the Moyle, Stewarts and Crowe trophies. Scroungers
is on today with Leisure Day and Veterans next
Tuesday.

Miffling
Makes It Look Easy
Graeme
Miffling continues to bask in the afterglow of the
Cats’ premiership with another victory in the
Cottesloe Golf Club sponsored Stableford event last
Saturday. Miffling only recorded 37 points, but this
was enough on a day where playing conditions were
very tough. A host of players finished with 36
points, with Alan Davies taking second position by
way of a countback. Ed Riley claimed third position
with Trizzy Lawrence, Des Hebb, Eric Annandale and
Bryan Simpson also finishing with 36 points each.
Ross Brody, Ron Annandale, Peter Slater, George
Davis and Chris Bliss all played well to have 34
points and claim a voucher.
The
donors also supplied a trophy for the gross, and
this went to Hudson Hopewell with the excellent
gross score of 33.
Novelties
were also supplied by the sponsors and were won by
Hudson Hopewell, Paul Moyses and Ash Hollins for
nearest to pins, while Ross Brody and Alf Sanford
claimed longest first putts. Dan Clayton took out
the long drive novelty.
A
good field of 73 players competed in the event and
the CCR was 73.
There
was a good crowd in the clubhouse for presentations,
which added to the atmosphere. There were also many
favourable comments from the Cottesloe members and
the Wayfarers group on the quality of the meal that
was provided on Saturday night.
You
have to get up early if you want to put one over on
some of our older members. One young upstart from
Cottesloe was fairly loud prior to his game on
Saturday, but he finished up drinking from the
chamber pot with a humble expression after his game.
It
was good the boys from the city got a reminder that
they were in the country last Saturday, with a walk
through the south paddock, which was previously the
sixteenth fairway.
***
Fred
Bronickis returned to the winners list when he
recorded 21 points to take out Scroungers last
Thursday. He won from David Broadbent, Charlie
Serravite, Michael Stocks, Eric Annandale, Ray Alp,
Phil Warburton and Gerard Pullan, who all finished
with 20 points.
Novelties
were won by Brian Banks, Ray Alp and Dick Earl.
Banks has obviously recovered from his arduous
Country Week campaign, where he managed five holes
for the week.
Visitor
Barry McGill took out the gross with 38, while Nancy
Lynn was the best of the Associates with 17 points.
A total of 52 men and four Associates took part in
the event.
***
Jeff
Bebbington played great golf to record 33 points and
win Veterans last Tuesday. Ken Smallwood took second
position, from Frank Battista and Les Udy. All of
these players had 31 points. Peter Gray and Dave
Brunswick finished on 30 points, Ernie Sullivan 29
points, Jim Moyses 28 points, Ed Riley, Hugh
Annandale Jim Tyler and Dave Henderson all had 27
points on a day when it seems you were unlucky not
to get a mention. Novelties were won by Frank
Battista, Ken Smallwood and Dave Henderson, who
stroked one in on eighteen to take out the long
putt.
***
The
master of Leisure Day, Clayton Flynn had 36 points
to win from Hudson Hopewell on a countback on a day
when 8 players competed in the event.
***
There
is an entry form on the notice board for Dorsett Day
on November 18th, which promises to be a
marvellous day, with great trophies, a meal and
entertainment to follow the event.
***
Also
Super Scroungers will be played on Sunday November
11th with all welcome.
***
This
week sees an 18 hole Par event sponsored by Peter
Slater and Brett Duffield. It should be a great day
with a lot of humour guaranteed. Scroungers is on
today with Veterans and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

Van Vollenstee Dominates Par
Again
The
‘Doctor’ Jan Van Vollenstee continued his run of
excellent form to record +7 and easily take out the
time honoured Collie Mail trophy last Saturday. Van
Vollenstee must have a liking for Par events, as his
previous win also took place in a Par event. The man
who always looks to be in control of his game, Matt
Harker, also played good golf to record +5 and take
out second place. Clive Pullan, fresh from a sojourn
to Country Week, had +3 to claim third position.
Phil Eldridge also had +3 while Steve Edwards, Colin
Brown and Phil Warburton all had +2. A host of
players finished with +1 including Ed Riley, Eric
Annandale, Greg Bell, Graeme Miffling and Trizzy
Lawrence.
Novelties
were won by Eric Annandale, Colin Brown and Peter
Gray for nearest to pins, while Phil Warburton and
Wayne Waywood claimed longest putts. As expected
Steve ‘The Hammer’ Wallace picked up the long
drive novelty.
A
total of fifty players took part, and with more run
starting to come onto the course this was reflected
in the CCR being 70.
***
With
the change back to full handicaps scoring was
expected to be high in last Thursday’s Scroungers.
In the end Stephen Farquhar prevailed with 21 points
to win from George Davis on 20 points. Eric
Annandale, Charlie Serravite, Jim Moyses and Ross
Brody all had 19 points to claim a voucher. Farquhar
also claimed the gross with 41 off the stick.
Novelties were won by Rob Ferris, Jeff Bebbington
and David Van Zyl.
***
Phil
Warburton had 30 points to take out Veterans last
Tuesday. He won from Neil McDonald on 28 points with
Alf Sanford and Alan Kent both receiving a mention
for 25 points. Novelties were won by Les McGill,
Jeff Crowe, Hugh Annandale and Phil Warburton.
***
The
visit of the cycle tour last week was an
overwhelming success in all aspects. The organisers
are to be thoroughly congratulated for their
efforts, and the venue has already been booked for
next year’s event.
***
The
18 golfers that represented the club at Country Week
came away with a very mixed bag of results.
Outstanding performances were put in by Stephen
Ireland, who shared a fourball victory with Peter
Ellery at Seaview, and also a second place in the
Stroke event at The Vines. Dean Rakich had a victory
in the Stableford event at The Cut and also a fourth
place with Troy Sheppard in the fourball. Sheppard
and Rakich also should get a mention for getting
around The Cut without losing a ball. As was stated
there was a mixed bag with many putting in what
could only be described as absolutely miserable
performances. The reward for those was the indignity
of having to wear a ridiculous jacket out for the
evening meal. In fact, Graham Williams at one stage
was mistaken for the 1956 judo gold medallist.
***
There
will be meal on this week after the game on Saturday
and a sumptuous meal is promised at the great value
of only $22 per person.
***
A
couple of dates for the diary coming up are the
Super Scroungers Sunday on November 11th and Dorsett
Day the following Sunday.
***
This
Saturday will see an 18 hole Stableford. There will
be a group of visitors from Cottesloe Golf Club who
are sponsoring the event. Scroungers is on today as
usual.

Hopewell Makes it
a Hat Trick
Hudson
Hopewell brought up a trifecta of club championships
with the best three round total of 227 to easily
beat promising junior Ben Kononen by 18 shots.
Hopewell’s total was one better than his previous
year. Kononen picked up the trophy for the leading
junior. Matt Harker played very well to grab third
with 246 while Trizzy Lawrence and Dean Rakich tied
for fourth with 250.
The
big ‘G’ Graham Williams took out the B grade
with 276 from Dave Brunswick and Peter Slater on
277. Williams has turned his game around this season
after suffering major swing problems. The main
problem was that he couldn’t hit the ball.
Trizzy
Lawrence successfully defended his Veterans crown
with 250 from the consistent Greg Bell 261 and the
evergreen Ron Annandale with 273.
Dean
Rakich and Matt Harker tied for nett honours with
214 apiece. Tony Barker-May also played well to
finish with 219 and claim a trophy. Trophies will be
presented this Saturday and it would be appreciated
if all winners could be present to receive their
spoils.
***
Peter
Slater made a most welcome return to the victory
dais when he shot 68 nett to take out the Piva’s
Deli Stroke event last Saturday. The methodical and
some would say laborious Slater has struggled at
times during the season, but had a one shot buffer
over the rapidly improving Jan Van Vollenstee and
the rejuvenated Bryan Simpson. Others to feature
included David Broadbent and the in form Jim Moyses
with 71 each, Hudson Hopewell, Dave Brunswick and
Stumpy Ireland with 72s, and Ed Riley, Fred
Bronickis and Tony Barker-May each with 73.
On
a day when 60 players took part the course was rated
at 72 and novelties went to Dave Brunswick, Graham
Williams and Greg Bell for nearest to pins , Ben
Kononen and Daniel Tylor for long putts and Neil
Kennedy for the long drive.
This
must have been Daniel Tylor’s one good shot for
the day as according to his playing partners he
needs to fit a scrub bar on his buggy, in order to
reach some parts of the course after some very
ordinary golf.
***
Last
Thursday’s Scroungers was the final one before
full handicaps are restored this week and it saw
Bill Hunter and Jim Moyses tied with 20 points.
Hunter took it on a spin and was also the gross
winner with 37 off the stick. Peter ‘The Putter’
Ellery had 19 points as did Alan Davies, Barry
Kononen and Ernie Sullivan. Novelties were won by
Harry Hadfield, Les McGill and Dick Earl. Three
Associates played, with the best being June Pike
with 14 points.
***
George
Davis and Ernie Sullivan both had 27 points to head
the Veterans last Tuesday. Hugh Annandale finished
with 26 points while Ray Alp, Ross Brody and Jim
Moyses also got a mention for their 25 points.
Novelties were won by Jim Moyses, George Davis and
Ross Brody.
***
A
field of seven contested Leisure Day and Dean Rakich
was the best of a bad bunch with 36 points.
***
With
Griffin-Wesfarmers Day not too far off many part
timers are dusting off the clubs. One making a
comeback this year is Bobby Roy Pimm. After an
inglorious performance both on the fairways and in
the clubhouse at his previous outing the whisper is
that he is the man to back this year.
***
This
Saturday sees an 18 hole Par event sponsored by the
Collie Mail. Scroungers is on today and Veterans and
Leisure Day as usual next Tuesday.

Smith Takes Victory
Brett
Smith played some excellent golf last Saturday
morning to amass 40 points and win the Stableford
competition. With the AFL Grand Final taking place
only 37 players contested the event and Smith had a
two point buffer over his closest opponent, Dave
Brunswick. Others to feature included George Davis
with 36 points, Ed Riley 35 points, and Stephen
Farquhar and Ian Stewart with 34 points apiece.
Novelties
went to Dean Crowe, George Davis and Frank Battista
for nearest to pins, while Trevor Lawrence and Bryan
Simpson took out longest first putts. Trizzy
Lawrence was also the winner of the long drive down
15.
***
Jim
Moyses had 19 points but this was enough to take out
Scroungers last Thursday. Mark Malatesta also had 19
points but Moyses prevailed in the spin of the
wheel. A number of players returned 18 points and
were duly rewarded with a voucher. These included
Peter Ellery, Neil Motion, John Michalak, Les
McGill, Daniel Tylor, David Broadbent and Stephen
Ireland . Novelties were won by John Michalak, Bruce
Roberts and Mark Malatesta. A total of 48 men and
three Associates contested the event with Nancy
Lynn’s 13 points being enough to be best of the
Associates.
***
21
players contested Veterans last Tuesday and Les Udy
had 27 points and was declared the winner. Greg
Bell, back from his trip to Croatia and getting back
into the swing amassed 25 points while Dave
Henderson and Frank Battista both had 24 points.
Novelties went to Alan Banks, Ken Smallwood, Les Udy
and John Wray.
***
The
annual pilgrimage to Perth for Country Week will
take place next week with the club being represented
by 15 players, and that term is being very generous
in some cases. Numbers have being falling steadily
over the past few years and is possibly a reflection
of the club’s ageing population.
***
Also
next week will see the clubs facilities being used
by a large group of touring bike riders. A great
deal of effort is being put into this venture in
terms of organisation and catering, and hopefully
with plenty of volunteers this will prove to be very
successful for the club.
***
This
Saturday sees the last round of the club
championships played, with a great deal of interest
still existing in many grades. Hudson Hopewell seems
assured of taking out the A Grade gross as he is
leading his closest rival, Ben Kononen, by a massive
16 shots. The nett in the A Grade is a very close
affair, with Matt Harker and Dean Rakich tied on 214
apiece. Graham Williams has a commanding lead over
David Pullan and Barry Kononen in the B Grade gross,
while Pullan leads clearly from Williams and Charlie
Serravite in the nett section. Trizzy Lawrence looks
to have the Veterans gross sown up, while Garry
Dawson, George Davis, Clive Pullan and Ray Alp look
set to fight it out for the nett honours.
***
Dale
and Christine Miffling will sponsor the Stroke round
this Saturday, with Scroungers on today and Veterans
next Tuesday.

Miffling Takes Out Par Event
Graeme
Miffling had a great start to what he hopes will be
a successful week, culminating with his beloved Cats
taking out the flag, by winning the Par event last
Saturday. The event was sponsored by Jim Atkinson
and attracted a good field of 56 players on a day
when conditions were ideal for golf. Miffling
recorded the score of plus 2, but this was enough
for victory when only four players finished in the
positives. In second place on a countback was the
consistent Trevor McCormick on a count back from
Dave Brunswick and Les Udy. All of these players
finished on plus 1. A host of players finished
square, including Ben Kononen , George Davis, Trizzy
Lawrence, Bill Hunter, Ed Riley, Des Hebb and Alan
Davies.
Novelties
were won by Leigh Bernardi, Rod Simmonds and Trizzy
Lawrence for nearest to pins, while ‘Sydney’
Ireland and Frank Battista took out long putts.
Young tyro Ben Kononen took the long drive novelty
down fifteen.
On
a day when there were a few scores in double
figures, Ray Cooper again put his hand up for
notoriety when he recorded ten consecutive negatives
in a row. Needless to say he was one of the players
finishing with double figures.
***
The
annual mixed foursomes championships were conducted
last Sunday, with victory going to the pair of Vicki
Graham and Dean Rakich. They recorded the gross
score of 127 to win in a thrilling finish by one
shot from Bev Moyses and Ron Crabbe. Third in the
gross was the pair of Stephen and Kaye Farquhar with
134 . Graham and Rakich took out nett honours with
108¾, from Moyses and Crabbe 111¼ .
Dion and Ken Smallwood also received a trophy for
their nett of 121¾.
The
event only attracted eight pairs, and it is hoped
that there will be more interest in the club’s
premier mixed day, Dorsett Day, which is scheduled
for November.
***
Hugh
Annandale was the runaway winner of Scroungers last
Thursday. He recorded 22 points to win easily from
Stephen Farquhar, who finished with 20 points. New
member Barry Creighton had 19 points to take third
position. Ken Smallwood, Ash Stewart and Charlie
Serravite all finished with 18 points. Bryan
Simpson, Ed Riley, Bill Hunter and Graham Williams
all played well to finish with 17 points and receive
a voucher. Novelties went to Bruce Roberts, Eric
Annandale and Daniel Tylor, while Greg Bell and Ash
Stewart shared gross honours.
Best
of the Associates was Betty White, on a day when 56
men and six Associates played in the event.
***
John
Wray was the best of the fifteen players in the
Veterans last Tuesday. Wray had the excellent score
of 32 points to win easily from Stephen Farquhar on
26 points. George Davis, Bryan Simpson and Jim Hine
all had 25 points while Ray Alp also got a mention
for his 24 points. Novelties went to Bryan Simpson,
George Davis, Dave Brunswick and John Wray.
***
This
Saturday’s event is an individual Stableford with
additional timeslots available in the morning for
those players wishing to have a round before the AFL
Grand Final. Scroungers is on today, with Veterans
and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

Sugget Masters Conditions
Mark
Sugget shone out on a cold miserable day when most
of the field battled to overcome the wind and rain
that battered the course. Sugget amassed 40 points
to win the Stableford event sponsored by good
members John Brown, Trevor and Ben McCormick and Tom
Chappell. Sugget, who hasn’t played a great deal
of golf this season due to work commitments, had a
one shot buffer over Veteran Bryan Simpson, who
continued his golden run of late. Trizzy Lawrence
took third place with 37 points with David Laird
grabbing a trophy for his 34 points. He beat Ken
Smallwood and Dean Rakich who also returned with 34
points. Ron Crabbe was on his lonesome with 33
points while Mick Dowling, Ron Annandale, David
Broadbent and Les Udy were all rewarded for their 32
points.
With
the scoring so low the course was rated at 73 and
novelties were won by Mick Dowling, Rod Miller and
Trevor McCormick for nearest to pins, while Rod
Miller and Frank Battista took out longest first
putts. Ash Stewart belted one down 15 to take the
long drive.
On
a day when there wasn’t a great deal of sun, a
group on seven tee got a burst of light courtesy of
the genial Ken Smallwood.
***
The
early favourite for the Summer Open, Ash Stewart
continued to play outstanding golf when he fired 21
points to take out Scroungers last Thursday. Stewart
won from playing partner Matt Harker and Bruce
Roberts, who both returned the good score of 20
points. Also in the mix were Peter Ellery, who must
surely be rated the best putter in the club, and Ian
Annandale for their 18 points, while Troy Sheppard,
Wayne Waywood, Neil Richards and Jim Hine received a
voucher for their 17 points. Novelties went to Eric
Annandale, Jim Hine and Ed Riley.
Shelley
Barker-May was the best of the Associates with 14
points on a day when 48 men and 5 Associates took
part.
It
is not often a player has almost as many of the
dreaded shanks as points during a round. Ray Cooper
achieved this dubious honour when the difference was
a meagre two in favour of the points. Ash Hollins
can hardly wait for Country Week when he partners
Cooper in the fourball.
***
Jeff
Crowe continues to play well and his 27 points was
enough to win Veterans last Tuesday. Dave Brunswick
finished second with 25 points while Jim Hine, Jim
Tyler and Phil Warburton all received a mention for
their 24 points. Novelties went to Hugh Annandale,
Jim Hine , Les Udy and Richard Earl.
***
Greenkeeper
Daniel Tylor deserves a mention for his dedication
to his family. There was some doubt whether he would
make his sister’s wedding on time, due to playing
commitments in a hockey semi final. However he made
sure of getting there on time by receiving a red
card and being evicted from the stadium.
***
Last
Monday saw the club host the annual South West High
Schools golf tournament with some good and very poor
golf being on display from the enthusiastic juniors.
***
This
Saturday sees an individual Par for the Friary
trophy with Scroungers and Veterans and Leisure Day
on as usual.

Alp and Simpson Defy Father
Time
It
was only fitting that two of the club’s elder
statesmen in Ray Alp and Bryan Simpson combined well
to take out the 4BBB sponsored by the club Veterans
last Saturday. Simpson, who is 84, and Alp, 75, made
light of their advancing years to amass the
excellent score of 46 Stableford points to easily
win from a group of pairs who finished with 44
points. Included in this group were Michael Stocks
and Rodney Miller, Peter Slater and Dean Rakich, Ron
Annandale and Steve Farquhar, and Bill Hunter and Ross
Davidson. Also cracking a mention were the powerful
combination of Jim Atkinson and Chris Bliss who took
advantage of the benign conditions in the morning to
record 43 points.
The
Veterans put on novelties on all holes which made
sure there was plenty of interest for all players
throughout the day. Winners of novelties were Dave
Brunswick, Barry McGill, Hugh Annandale, Clive
Pullan, Michael Stocks, Rhys Milburn and Peter
Slater for longest putts. Ross Davidson, Dean
Rakich, Hudson Hopewell, Ron Crabbe, Jim Hine and
Alan Kent all picked up novelties for nearest to
pins or markers while Rod Miller won the long drive
down 15.
A
good field of 60 players contested the event on a
day when players experienced Melbourne type weather
with four seasons in one day.
It
is amazing what a little pressure can do to some
player’s game. Suddenly after cruising along all
day, doubts creep in, the greens become like glass,
and those one metre putts become impossible.
***
Big
David Broadbent had one of his good days when he
played very well to score 21 points and take out
Scroungers last Thursday. Despite faltering over the
final holes Broadbent held on to win from a group of
players who all finished with 19 points. Included in
this group were Michael Stocks, Jim Moyses, Stephen
Farquhar and Ash Stewart. Ray Alp, Neil Kennedy, Ray
Cooper and Ian Annandale all did well to finish with
17 points and receive a voucher.
Novelties
were won by Skinny Russell, Ray Cooper and Kevin
Ireland.
On
a day when 55 men and seven Associates took part, Helen
Annandale was the pick of the Associates with 18
points from Angela Ireland and Kaye Farquhar, who
both finished with 16 points.
George
Dorozenko was back to his worst and his tee shot on
six typified his day. It took him 3 shots to get back
level with the tee after reverse shanking his ball
backwards down eight fairway.
***
Bryan
Simpson warmed up for his game on Saturday by
winning Veterans with 26 points last Tuesday. Ed
Riley played well for 25 points with George
Dorozenko, Hugh Annandale and Jim Hine all finishing
with 24 points. Novelties went to Alf Sanford, Jeff
Crowe and Phil Warburton. It's good to see Jeff Crowe
can putt as well he can land big fish.
***
Just
when everything was proceeding well with the
reticulation upgrade now Daniel and his team have to
dig up the 166 sprinklers and put in new solenoids
after receiving incorrect models from the suppliers.
***
A
final reminder for Country Week players that
nominations close next Monday.
***
This
week will be an individual Stableford sponsored by
good members John Brown, Trevor McCormick and To
Chappell. Scroungers will be on today with Veterans
and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

Van Volenstee Has Big Win
Jan
Van Vollenstee broke through for his maiden victory
when he recorded plus 4 to win the par event played
last Saturday. The event, sponsored by Bruce and
Debbie Miller of Collie SportFirst, attracted a
field of 46 players. Van Volenstee, a former
Northern Transvaal rugby representative, has put a
great deal of time into his game since joining the
club and he richly deserved his win. Stephen
Farquhar has enjoyed a return to form of late and
his score of plus 2 was enough for him to claim
second position. Tom Chappell showed he has not lost
his skills despite not playing much golf of late,
and returned plus 1, as did Hudson Hopewell. Trizzy
Lawrence, Mark Sugget and Dan Clayton all did well
to finish square on a day when the course was rated
at 72. A host of players finished 1 down and were
rewarded with a voucher. These included David
Broadbent, Bill and Scott Hunter, Graham Williams,
Garry Dawson, Alf Sanford , Mark Malatesta, Clive
Pullan , Ed Riley and Ron Annandale.
Novelties
were won by Hudson Hopewell, Garry Dawson and Dean
Rakich for nearest to pins, while Peter Gray and
Trent Wheeler took out longest first putts. New
member Neil Kennedy showed a glimpse of things to
come when he took out the long drive down 15.
***
Stephen
Farquhar run of good form at present was reflected
before the Saturday game in his Scroungers
performance, and he played some excellent golf to
record 22 points and a win last Thursday. He had one
point to spare from Charlie Serravite with Daniel
Tylor taking third place with 20 points. George
Davis, Clive Pullan, Eric Annandale, John Wray,
Brian Banks and Neil Richards were all rewarded for
their 17 points. Novelties were taken out by Alan
Banks, Jeff Crowe and Neil Richards. Stephen
Farquhar and Daniel Tylor tied for the gross with 38
off the stick on a day when 49 men and five
Associates played. Best of the Associates was Bev
Moyses with 14 points.
***
‘Wedgie’
Waywood took out a low scoring Leisure Day when he
beat Clayton Flynn on a countback. Both of these
players recorded 35 points.
***
Alf
Sanford has rediscovered his game of late, and he
continued his good form when he scored 29 points to
win Veterans last Tuesday. Hugh Annandale ran second
with 27 points while Les McGill and Bryan Simpson
both were rewarded for their 26 points apiece.
Novelties were taken out by Bryan Simpson, George
Davis and Ed Riley.
***
The
dreaded shanks are a golfer’s nightmare, so spare
a thought for the poor member who reeled off six of
them during Scroungers last Thursday. Needless to
say the same player is aiming for a trifecta of
‘jackets’ this week
***
Country
Week nominations close on Monday 17th
September, and members intending on playing must pay
the $50.60 at the bar.
***
This
week sees a 4BBB Stableford sponsored by the
Veterans. There will be novelties on each hole, and
it promises to be a great day with some interesting
and one sided challenges taking place. The time
honoured Scroungers is on today and it must be
getting close to going back to full handicaps. The
usual Veterans and Leisure Day will be on next
Tuesday.

Chris Stewart Captures Prize
Chris
Stewart continued his stunning return to golf when
he played some excellent golf to take out the
Bendigo Bank Stroke event last Saturday. Chris,
along with brother Ash, have dominated the golf
scene during the past month. Chris has always been
one of the most talented players produced by the
club and he shot 75 off the stick for a nett 70. He
had a two shot buffer over a group of players that
included Matt Harker, Ash Stewart and Dean Rakich.
Harker took second place by way of a countback..
Others to feature on the day included Alan Davies
with 73, and Garry Dawson, Clayton Flynn, Barry
Kononen, Graham Williams, Troy Sheppard, Mauro
Giorgi, Ian Prosser and Daniel Tylor with 74 nett.
On
a day when many centuries were recorded, Hudson
Hopewell took out the gross trophy with 82. A good
field of 64 players contested the event, and the
difficult conditions were reflected with the CCR of
73.
The
sponsors were very generous with a number of extra
novelties being awarded and the winners included,
Trizzy Lawrence, Danny Ennor, and Graham Williams
for nearest the pins. Leigh Bernardi and Luke
Bleasdale took out long drives, while Alan Davies,
Tony Barker-May, Ian Prosser and Dean Rakich won
longest putts.
Eagles
supporters Ben Tate and Michael Slater won the
annual challenge against the hapless Saints, which
included the owner of the despised brown dog. Also
apparently one member who is fine tuning for the
summer season is in dire need of a new belt to hold
his pants up during the round.
***
Jeff
Crowe continues to play well and he had 23 points to
win Scroungers last Thursday. He had to survive a
spin from former top golfer Rob ‘Bomber’
Sherwood. Alf Sanford also continues to play well,
and he had 22 points to take third place. Eric and
Ron Annandale both recorded 20 points, as did Ed
Riley, Dale Miffling, George Dorozenko and Ben
Kononen. 47 men and five Associates contested the
event, with Ben Kononen taking out the gross with
36. Novelties were won by Alan Banks, Eric Annandale
and Ray Cooper. Rhonda McGill scored 15 points to be
the best of the Associates.
***
Hudson
Hopewell had 36 points to win Leisure Day from
Clayton Flynn and Trevor McCormick, who both
recorded 34 points apiece.
***
Stephen Farquhar played
some excellent golf to score 29 points and take out
the Veterans competition last Tuesday. Bryan Simpson
did well to finish with 28 points while Phil
Warburton, Ray Alp and Hugh Annandale all got a
mention with their 26 points. Novelties were won by
Ray Alp, Jim Hine, Steve Farquhar and Dave
Brunswick.
***
Spare
a thought for member David Broadbent. With no horse
racing he has had to alter his grip so he actually
holds the club with two hands, instead of his usual
with one attached to his mobile phone.
***
Members
intending to play Country Week are reminded that the
nomination sheet is on the notice board and payment
is to be made at the bar.
***
Also
the mixed foursomes will now be played on Sunday 23rd
September. Hopefully there will be more nominations

Smith and Kutt Combine For
Victory
Kalev
Kutt and Brett Smith combined beautifully to score
47 points and take out the 4BBB Stableford
competition last Saturday. The event was sponsored
by good members Leigh and Matt Bernardi and
attracted the good field of 28 pairs. Kutt and Smith
had a three point buffer over their closest rivals,
Graham Williams and Peter Slater. Also finishing
with 44 points were the Stewart troupe of Chris and
Ash. The sponsors were very generous in their prize
allocation, which went to fourth place as well as a
gross. Fourth position went to the primary
principals duo of Ron Crabbe and Charlie Serravite,
with 43 points, while Hudson Hopewell and Ken
Smallwood took out the gross.
Others
to feature on a perfect day for golf included Alf
Sanford and John Wray, Kevin and Stumpy Ireland,
Dave Brunswick and Steve Wallace all on 42 points,
Dean Rakich and Troy Sheppard, and Neil Motion and
John Michalak with 41 points.
Novelties
were won by Ash Stewart, Neil Motion and Dean Rakich
for nearest to pins, Peter Slater and Hudson
Hopewell for longest first putts, while Hudson
Hopewell just pipped Ron Annandale for the long
drive down 15.
Vice
President Steve Ireland is the latest member to join
the ever expanding cart brigade. Now the proud owner
of ‘The Black Flash’, Ireland missed
presentations for the first time ever, as he opted
to take his new toy home and do some panel beating
after it took a blow from his playing partners.
The
ex captain had a day to forget with a round that
included a five putt, four shots that failed to get
out of the bunker on 18, and two shanks. Needless to
say he will not be buttering up for this week’s
Stroke round.
***
Talk
about breaking droughts must have inspired Ash
Hollins in last Thursday’s Scroungers. Hollins’
last win in any golf competition was when Geelong
won their last flag. Hollins played inspired golf to
amass 20 points and beat Peter Ellery and Paul
Moyses on a spin. It was a good effort by Moyses,
who hasn’t played a great deal this season due to
his coaching duties with the Collie Eagles colts.
Players who scored 18 points were rewarded and these
included Hugh Annandale, Greg Moyle, Alf Sanford,
Daniel Tylor, Eric Annandale and Brian Banks, who
returned after announcing his retirement the
previous Saturday. Daniel Tylor’s round included a
sensational eagle on one after his four iron
approach landed a metre from the pin.
Novelties
were won by Ash Hollins, Alf Sanford and Ed Riley.
On
a day when 53 men and five Associates contested the
event, Betty White was the pick of the Associates
with 18 points.
***
The
club’s annual general meeting was conducted last
Sunday with President Ian Stewart keeping command
for another year. Stephen Ireland remains as Vice
President with Joe Italiano retaining the
Secretary’s position. Dean Rakich has taken over
as Captain, and at this stage there are still three
vacant committee positions. Treasurer Greg Bell will
continue on, and the club at this stage is in a
sound financial position.

This
week will see the fourth round of the club
championships. The event will be sponsored by
Bendigo Bank. Scroungers is on today with the usual
Veterans and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

President
Takes Par
Club
President Ian Stewart enjoyed a rare day in the sun
last Saturday when he was successful in the Collie
Mowers ‘n’ More Par event. Stewart has not
saluted the judge for a considerable time, but
played very well to record +4 to win from Colin
Naysmith who finished with +3. The resurgent
Naysmith took second place by virtue of a countback
from the ever consistent Hudson Hopewell. Other
players to feature included Garry Dawson and Graeme
Miffling with +2, and Rod Simmonds, Matt Harker and
Ray Alp with +1, while Bruce Roberts, Trent Wheeler,
Steve Farquhar, Peter Ellery, George Davis and Ross
Davidson all did well to finish square.
A
very good field of 65 players contested the event,
which was played in ideal conditions. The course was
rated at 71.
Novelties
went to Clayton Flynn, Trizzy Lawrence and Neil
McDonald for nearest to pins while Jim Hine and
Clayton Flynn claimed longest first putts. The long
drive down 15 went to Trevor Johns.
The
highlight of the day went to new member Neil
McDonald when he aced the 14th hole.
McDonald claimed the Eagles nest for his fine
effort.
***
Jim
Hine played some excellent golf to amass 21 points
to win Scroungers last Thursday. Jim Moyses also
played well for his 19 points and second place. Neil
Motion, George Davis and Phil Warburton all had 18
points, while Ed Riley and visitor Christian McGill
both received a voucher for their 17 points.
Novelties were won by George Davis and Phil
Warburton on a day when 42 members contested the
event. There wasn’t much heart displayed out there
last week, with many players withdrawing when light
drizzle hit the course in the late afternoon.
***
Ed
Riley continues to play well and he took out the
Veterans competition with 30 points last Tuesday.
Riley had a three point buffer from the second
placed Bryan Simpson, with Alf Sanford continuing
with his good form with 26 points. Les Udy, George
Davis and Ernie Sullivan were also rewarded for
their 25 points apiece.
Novelties
for the day went to Ed Riley, George Davis, Ray Alp
and Phil Warburton.
***
With
the State Seniors Fourball coming up it is good to
see Ray ‘Toecutter’ Cooper teaming up with Ron
Hoyer from Royal Yokine and representing the club in
this event.
***
The
club’s AGM will take place this Sunday, and with
some important issues being discussed it is hoped
members will all make an effort to attend.
***
This
Saturday will see a 4BBB Stableford event played
sponsored by good members Leigh and Matt Bernardi.
Scroungers is on today with Veterans and Leisure Day
next Tuesday.

Stewart Sizzles in the Sun
On
a delightful winter’s day Ash Stewart continued
his red hot run of form when he took out the Lotex
Filters Stableford competition last Saturday. The
long hitting, left handed Stewart compiled a very
tidy 39 points to take the trophy on a day when most
players found the going very tough.
Noddy
Moyle took second place by way of a countback from
Joe Italiano and Stephen Farquhar. All of these
players came in with 38 points. Others to get a
mention included Bill Hunter and Steve Wallace on 37
points, Dean Crowe, Ron Annandale and Ray Alp with
36 points, and Ian Annandale and Jaydon Ellery with
35 points. A total of 58 players took part in the
event, and the CCR was 72.
Ron
Annandale had bragging rights over son Ian when he
picked up a first class birdie on eight, but it
didn't last long. When Ian came through a few groups
later he also birdied eight - and followed it with a
birdie on nine!
Novelties
were taken out by Steve Farquhar, Peter Slater and
Wayne Waywood for nearest the pins, Ian Annandale
and Neil Richards for longest putts, and Daniel Tylor
took the long drive for a monster down 15.
You
would have thought the game was played at Carnoustie
and not Collie by the amount of very poor scores.
Among the worst and receiving the NAGA by being the
lowest score in the clubhouse at presentations, was
the former prominent wrestler Ross ‘The
Wrassler’ Davidson. Others to feature in this
dubious section included George Dorozenko, whose
round included a windy on the manicured turf of the
first fairway.
***
Popular
veteran Bryan Simpson broke through for a well
deserved victory at Scroungers last Thursday.
Simpson took out first place by way of a spin from
John Wray. Both of these players recorded 19 points.
Wray also took gross honours for his good round. In
third place was Ian Annandale with 17 points. 51 men
contested the event and novelties were won by Peter
Ellery and Daniel Tylor. In the Associates section
Bev Moyses and Annette Atherton both received a
voucher for their 15 points apiece.
***
The
Veterans proved to have a bit more heart than their
Leisure Day counterparts when they braved the wintry
weather last Tuesday. Des Hebb took out the event
from the rejuvenated Alf Sanford. Both of these
players recorded 24 points. Bryan Simpson had 23
points to take third position. Novelties went to
Phil Warburton, Alf Sanford and Des Hebb.
***
The
annual mixed foursomes championships will take place
on Sunday August 26th. It is a 27 hole
event with hit offs commencing around 10.30am.
There is an entry sheet on the noticeboard and
members are urged to support this time honoured
event.
***
The
event this week is an individual Par sponsored by
Collie Mowers 'n' More. Scroungers is on today with
Veterans and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

Harker and Stewart Reign
Supreme
Former
football team mates Matt Harker and Ash Stewart
combined brilliantly to take out the Collie Eagles 2
person Ambrose last Saturday. Harker and Stewart
produced a sensational back nine, shooting a 4 under
32 for the very good overall score of 69 gross and
nett 63. The hardware king Stewart was red hot with
the flat stick all day and the pair had two strokes
to spare from runners up Dean Rakich and Troy
Sheppard. Both the winners and second placed pairs
received trophies from the sponsors, who were well
represented by the former marathon champion Colin
Naysmith.
Joe
Italiano and Mark Sugget finished third with 65¼ from Kevin Ireland and
visitor John Cormack on 65¾.
Morning players David Broadbent and Steve Wallace
were claiming victory but a check of their card
showed the boys need to revisit their maths skills.
Graham Williams has indicated he is available for
some private tutoring.
Other
pairs to rate a mention included Daniel Tylor &
Ken Smallwood 66¾,
Jim Atkinson & Greg Bell, Steve Ireland &
Bill Hunter 67¼, and
Ron Annandale & Steve Farquhar 67¾.
Novelties
went to Ray Cooper for two longest putts, Dean
Rakich, Greg Bell and Garry Dawson for nearest to
pins, while Mark Sugget took out the long drive.
Ken
Smallwood certainly looked the part in his new cart.
Stumpy Ireland is about to purchase one, but it is
believed delivery is being held up due to seatbelts
having to be fitted.
***
Ian
Annandale, like his beloved Roos, continued his
wonderful run of form when he scored 21 points to
win Scroungers last Thursday. Peter Ellery also
played very well to finish with 20 points and take
second position. 19 points was enough for Dean Crowe
to claim third place while Jeff Crowe, George Davis,
Eric Annandale, Phil Warburton, Ian Stewart and Tony
Barker-May all had 18 points. Alan Banks and John
Mumme also received a voucher for their 17 points
apiece.
Novelties
went to Trent Wheeler, Mick Pokrywka and Graham
Williams, while the Associates section was taken out
by Annette Atherton and Bev Moyses with 14 points
each.
***
Des
Hebb was successful in the Veterans last week when
he had 27 points to win from Dave Brunswick who also
had 27 points with Jeff Crowe and George Davis also
rating a mention with 26 points. Novelties were won
Des Hebb, George Davis and Ray Alp.
***
The
annual Seafood Night was held last Saturday and a
capacity crowd enjoyed the fare and good fellowship.
Thanks must go to Linda Hebb for the meal and to
Steve Ireland for his excellent overall
organisation.
***
This
Saturday an individual Stableford competition will
be held, sponsored by Lotex Filters. Scroungers is
on today with Veterans and Leisure Day next Tuesday.
It is also good to see the Collie Netball team going
so well.

Pullan Overcomes Conditions
David
Pullan overcame horrendous winter weather including
persistent rain and strong winds to shoot an
excellent 72 nett and take out the Golden Bowl
Stroke event last Saturday. The field size was
greatly affected by the inclement weather, and
players who did participate would have to have their
sanity questioned. The event also counted as the
third round of the club championships, and the
conditions made sure there were no dramatic changes
to overall standings with two rounds of the
championships remaining.
Hudson
Hopewell was one of a small but brave band of
players who played in the afternoon, and he turned
in an exceptional round with a gross of 77, nett 74,
to take out the very good gross trophy provided by
the sponsor Danny Cheng of the Golden Bowl. Big
David Broadbent also did well to take third place
with a 75 nett to claim a $10 voucher. Others to
feature included Barry Kononen with a 77 nett.
Novelties
went to David Broadbent for a longest first putt and
the long drive, Hudson Hopewell, who claimed two
nearest the pins, while Ray Cooper hit a very nice
shot into 4 for the closest and Charlie Serravite
saved the best till last to win the longest putt on
18.
Talk
about being keen, after getting drenched on
Saturday, Barry and Ben Kononen and Luke Bleasdale
were back Sunday morning playing again in the poor
weather. Keen or crazy?
***
The
big ‘G’ Graham Williams returned to his best
when he had 39 points to win Leisure Day last
Tuesday. Charlie Serravite, taking advantage of the
many holidays enjoyed by the teaching profession,
also played well to record 38 points and take second
position. Ben Kononen was his usual consistent self
to have 36 points and a mention.
***
John
Wray played well to win Veterans with 28 points last
Tuesday. Dave Brunswick and Alan Banks pushed him
with 27 points each, while Les McGill also cracked a
mention for his efforts. Novelties went to John
Mumme, John Wray, Dick Earl and Les McGill.
***
Unfortunately
due to the bad weather last Thursday no one was able
(or stupid enough) to play Scroungers.
***
This
Saturday the Seafood night will take place, with
Stumpy Ireland guaranteeing a sumptuous feast as
well as some excellent entertainment. There are
places available so if you are intending to go see
the Stump or let a member of the bar staff know.
***
The
automation of the reticulation system is going along
at a great rate and is ahead of schedule at this
point. Daniel , Rhys, Ron and the few others should
be congratulated on their work.
***
This
Saturday will see the Collie Eagles sponsored 2 man
Ambrose played. Players should make sure they drop
and not place when off the fairway. Hopefully
Scroungers will be on today with Leisure Day and
Veterans next Tuesday.

Choppa Strikes Another Blow
Dave
‘Choppa’ Czerniawsky recorded back to back
victories when he recorded six up in the Par event to
win the P and H Mine Pro Services trophy contested
last Saturday. This followed his shared win in the
fourball the previous week. At least the handicapper
was able to catch up with him this time, a reduction
of two in order.
P
and H put on a tremendous day with all players
rewarded for playing. Colin Giblett snared the
runner up trophy on 5 up and Matthew Harker third
place with four up, good signs leading into this
week’s club championship round.
Ben
Kononen with two up reduced his handicap to 4 after
registering the best gross on the day, and should
acquit himself well in the Graham Marsh Foundation
Junior tournament, held on three South West courses
this week.
Ron
Annandale hit them straight again to also have two up,
with Ed Riley, Clayton Flynn, Jan Van Volenstee and
Steve Farquhar matching the CCR with one up.
A
total of 52 players contested the event and
novelties went to Matt Harker, Colin Naysmith and
Graeme Miffling for nearest the pins. Charlie
Serravite and Clayton Flynn won the long putts and
prospective new member Trevor Johns belted the ball
down 15 to pick up the long drive.
P
and H also ensured the competitors were well watered
with a few jugs on the bar prior to presentations.
Word has it that one ‘slippery’ customer was
liable for two extra jugs after his effort playing
number 3.
***
‘Big
Mick’ Pokrywka relished the chance to hit off some
ladies markers in the mixed tees Scroungers event
last Thursday. Mick rounded up 22 points to win from
Wedgy Waywood on 21. Steve Farquhar, Ron Annandale,
Ray Cooper and Michael Stocks all had 20 points.
Novelties
were won by Wayne Waywood, Daniel Tylor and Ray Alp.
Betty
White and Annette Atherton had 17 points each in the
Associates event.
***
Ross
Brody had 26 points to be the best of the Veterans
last Tuesday. He had two to spare from Des Hebb and
Jim Hine with 24. Ernie Sullivan got a mention for
his 23.
Alf
Sanford not only won the novelties for his putts on
the ninth and eighteenth, but nearly took home a
trophy after a low flying shot on number six cleaned
up one of the feathered fraternity. He just missed
snatching it up for the dinner table as he only
winged it. Other novelties were taken out by Les Udy
and Frank Battista.
***
Ten
players took to the fairways for the Tuesday Leisure
Day last week with Dean Rakich getting over the line
on 37 points. Clayton Flynn and Kevin Ireland had 36
with Matt Harker putting the writing on the wall
with 35 points. His golf was a mixture of sublime
stroke play and rather mysterious misses near the
end. Don’t worry Matt, single figures are only one
good round away.
***
The
Greenkeeper and his helpers are well on track to
complete the back nine reticulation project.
Tomorrow and Saturday morning will see volunteer
work to fill in holes where sprinklers are completed
and any other general maintenance to get the course
ready for Saturday. All are welcome as many hands
make light work.
***
The
Seafood Night is on July 28th, names or
table bookings can be placed on the sheet at the
club or see Stumpy Ireland.
***
Scroungers
is on today, Saturday is the Golden Bowl stroke
event, a round of the Club Championships, and
Veterans and Leisure Day is on Tuesday.

These notes are not from the usual source. Word
around is that the mere mention of the word
‘retribution’ resulted in a hasty trip north for
the regular scribe! Normal service should be

Czerniawsky and Dawson Charge
to Big Win
Dave
‘Choppa’ Czerniawsky combined beautifully with
last minute partner Garry 'Smokey' Dawson to score 46 points
and win the Challenge Chemicals 4BBB contested last
Saturday. Played under threatening skies with a
strong north westerly wind blowing, Czerniawsky and
Dawson had one point to spare from second placed
fourball specialists Jim Moyses and Steve Farquhar.
In third place on a countback were Alan Kent and
Matt Bernardi from Barry and Ben Kononen. Both of
these combinations finished with 43 points. Others
to do well included Peter Slater and Dave Pullan on
42 points, Ron and Eric Annandale with 41 points and
Hudson Hopewell and Luke Bleasdale on 40 points.
A
good field of 58 players contested the event and
novelties went to Garry Dawson, visitor Laurie
Sullivan and Ben Kononen for nearest to pins, while
Matt Bernardi and Barry Kononen both nailed the long
putt novelties. Garry Dawson hit an enormous 3 metal
down 15 to win the long drive.
On
a day when many combinations failed to flatter,
frustration was the order of the day and none more
so than the usual ‘gentleman’ Jim Atkinson.
After carrying Colin Naysmith all day, he finally
snapped and demolished his trusty 7 iron and one
buggy wheel with one clean blow.
***
One
player missing last Saturday was Ross Davidson, who
has been forced to go gold prospecting in the Barlee
Ranges in the hope of covering a golf wager that has
not been paid. It must be a case of ‘Slippery’
by name and nature.
***
The
master of the anchor, Colin Naysmith must have
miscalculated last Thursday when he amassed 20
points to take out Scroungers. Ray McGill also hit
the ball well to have 19 points and take second
position. Dean Crowe and Frank Battista both had 18
points while Alan Davies, Hugh Annandale, Mark
Malatesta ,Ian Jones and Jim Moyses all had 17
points to receive a voucher. Novelties went to Mark
Malatesta, Dick Earl and Colin Naysmith.
On
a day when 47 men and 3 Associates played, Annette
Atherton was the best of the Associates with 13
points.
***
Jim
Hine scored 28 points to take the honours in
Veterans last Tuesday. Frank Battista and George
Davis both had 26 points to push the winner while
Phil Warburton and Jeff Crowe also rated a mention
for their performances.
Novelties
went to Ernie Sullivan, Ray Alp, Jim Hine and Hugh
Annandale.
***
With
Ray Cooper fast approaching retirement it is
rumoured he thinking of penning a book about the
rules and etiquette of golf. If this is the case it
will be one of the shortest books ever produced.
***
Last
Saturday Andy Van Dyke representing Worsley Alumina
presented the club with a sizeable cheque to assist
in the construction of a new machinery shed to
replace the old structure that currently houses the
club’s machines.
With
that construction taking place in the near future,
and the automation of the reticulation system on the
back nine currently being worked on at present as
well as possible changes to the buggy sheds to
enable more members to store their gear, the club is
experiencing some exciting changes.
***
Members
and guests are asked to note that the Seafood Night
is on July 28th and they should see Stumpy Ireland
to organise their tables for what should be a top
night.
***
This
Saturday will see an individual Par event for the
P&H Mine Pro Services trophy. With some very
good prizes on offer as well as a free drink or two,
members should make an effort to play this event.
Scroungers today will see an Odds and Evens game to
make a change from the usual format with Veterans
and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

Flynn
Has Fabulous Victory
Clayton
Flynn returned to his brilliant best to have plus 3
and take out the Tyco Flow Control Par event played
last Saturday. Flynn is one of the club’s most
consistent performers, and his win was very well
received at presentations. Flynn had to withstand a
spirited challenge from Ben Kononen, who also had
the very good score of plus 3 but was beaten on a
countback. The talented Matt Harker continued his
excellent form to have plus 2, while Hudson Hopewell
again did well to finish with plus 1.
Trophy
donor Steve Winwood saw fit to give trophies for
both winner and runner up in A grade and B grade,
and the winner of the B grade was John Michalak, who
recorded plus 1. Runner up in the B grade was Barry
Kononen with square.
Other
players to perform well on the day included Leon
Moran on square, while Dan Clayton, Ian Stewart and
Luke Bleasdale finished on minus 1 to each claim a
voucher.
Novelties
were won by Greg Martin, Ash Stewart and Dan Clayton
for nearest to pins, while Leon Moran and Luke
Bleasdale claimed longest putts. Ray Cooper was the
surprise winner of the long drive, surprising in the
fact he actually hit the fairway and the ball
travelled a reasonable distance.
***
King
of the relaxed lifestyle, Graham Williams scored a
very impressive 22 points to win Scroungers last
Thursday. Dean Rakich also played very impressively
to par the nine holes and finish second with 21
points. David Broadbent, who has resurrected his
game of late, had 20 points, while Ron Annandale and
Steve Wallace both finished with 18 points to claim
a voucher. Novelties were won by David Broadbent and
Ross Davidson, while Rhonda McGill was the best of
the Associates with 15 points.
Members
in a couple of groups were lucky to witness some
copybook bunker play from Colin Naysmith and George
Dorozenko. Word has it the ground staff needed a
bobcat to replace the sand that had been hacked out
of the bunkers.
***
Hudson
Hopewell again proved to be the master of Leisure
Day when he compiled a very tidy 38 points to win
from Greg Bell on 36 points and Noddy Moyle with 35
points.
***
Ed
Riley also played well to take Veterans on a spin
from Phil Warburton. Both players finished with 29
points. A host of players finished with 28 points,
including Frank Battista, Alan Banks, Jim Hine and
Steve Farquhar. Novelties were won by Bryan Simpson,
Steve Farquhar, Alan Banks and Jim Hine.
***

Waywood
Masters Winter Conditions
Winter
finally arrived last Saturday and Wayne ‘Wedge’
Waywood adapted best to the conditions to take out
the Premier Hotel stroke round. Waywood has not
played well since injuring his Achilles tendon, but
his once accurate driving returned last Saturday
when he recorded a nett 71 to win on a countback
from the talented Matt Harker. Hudson Hopewell
continued his excellent form when he had 75 off the
stick for a nett 72 to take the gross and third
position.
Others
to feature included Dean Rakich 74, Trizzy Lawrence,
Rod Miller, Ross Davidson, Frank Battista 75 and
Tony Barker-May 76.
Novelties
were won by Dean Rakich for a nearest the pin and
long drive, Bill Hunter and Ross Davidson also for
nearest the pins while Peter Rowe and Matt Harker
picked up longest first putts.
The
field of 43 players was good considering the heavy
rain that fell in the morning, and the difficult
conditions were reflected in the CCR of 73.
***
Georgio
‘Armani’ Dorozenko continues to play well on a
Thursday afternoon. After failing miserably last
Saturday, Dorozenko bounced back to form when he had
20 points to win Scroungers. Ray Alp also played
very well to record 19 points and second position.
Dean Rakich, Peter Rowe, Ray McGill and Alan Kent
also received a mention for their 18 points apiece.
Ben Kononen won the gross with 40, while Shelley
Barker-May was the best of the Associates with 20
points from Debbie Van Vollenstee on 18 points.
Novelties for the day were won by Ash Hollins, Dean
Rakich and Ed Riley.
***
With
the rose pruning season coming up, any member
wishing to get them pruned with a five iron should
see Eric Annandale, who apparently did an excellent
job on a grass tree last Thursday.
***
The
Veterans played a combined score event last Tuesday,
with Dick Earl and Phil Warburton shining with 52
points to win from Des Hebb and Jeff Crowe on 50
points. Alf Sanford and Les Udy also did well to
record 46 points, as did Dave Brunswick and Ed
Riley. Novelties were won by Phil Warburton, Jim
Hine, George Davis and Bryan Simpson.
***
Keith
‘Skinny’ Russell played very well to record 40
points and win last Tuesday’s Leisure Day. He won
from Hudson Hopewell, who also played well to have
36 points.
***
The
win in Vets capped off a big week for Dick Earl who
showed there is life in the old tiger when at the
local football last week. Dick shirt fronted one of
the opposing players who had strayed over the
boundary line, sending him cartwheeling backwards.
***
Work
continues to progress well with the reticulation,
and any member available to help fill in the
sprinkler holes should see Daniel Tylor, as any help
would be greatly appreciated.
***
Any
person wishing to nominate for committee should add
their name to the rapidly expanding list on the
noticeboard in the clubhouse.
***
This
Saturday will see a 18 hole individual Par event
sponsored by Steve Winwood/Tyco Flow Control. The
event will be divided up into A and B grade.

Hopewell Shines Through
Current
club champion Hudson Hopewell produced a brilliant
exhibition of golf to win the Solstice group trophy
last Saturday. Hopewell shot one under to record 41
points, beating Chris Bliss on a count back, the
latter’s dedication to the driving range paying
off. The event attracted the excellent field of 82
men and 14 Associates, and conditions proved to be
difficult, with the CCR set at 73.
Dean
Crowe also played very well to have 40 points to
take out third position. The ever consistent Greg
Bell recorded 38, while Ross Brody also continued
his good run of form to score 37 to pick up a
trophy.
The
trophy donors saw fit to reward a gross trophy,
which went to Greg Bell, and also a best visitor,
which was won by Clayton Bell with 35 points.
One
player who didn’t have such a good day was Jaydon
Ellery, who struggled in the morning possibly with
his health and golf to take out the NAGA. Others to
feature included Dean Rakich, Ian Jones and George
Davis with 36, and Ash Stewart, SS Kevin Ireland,
Clayton Flynn and - playing successfully to his
hugely reduced handicap - David Broadbent, with 35
each.
Best
of the Associates was Eileen Riley with 36 points
from Jill Burgess on 35 and Lorraine Annandale on
33. Each of these ladies received a trophy courtesy
of the sponsors.
Novelties
were won by Hudson Hopewell, Bev Moyses and Steven
Ireland for nearest to the pins, and Noddy Moyle and
John Michalak for longest putts, while Leigh
Bernardi took out the longest drive down 15.
Solstice
member Ash Hollins had a big day commencing with a
windy on number 10 tee and including a wild hook on
number 1 which cleared the houses on Mungalup Road.
However, Hollins was not alone in the windy stakes
with the club captain, and it is rumoured even the
president Ian Stewart, also recording the dubious
honour. However, possibly the shot of the day would
go to Brian Banks, or is that shanks, for his tee
shot on 18 which had players on 13 fairway diving
for cover.
Showing
the game isn’t as hard as it is made out was part
timer Val Brojanowski who recorded an eagle on the
par 5 number 3 hole. His score of 6 points on that
hole was almost better than some so called players
recorded for 18 holes.
***
The
gregarious Alan Kent recorded 19 points to win
Scroungers on a spin from Ray Alp and head Scrounger
Ed Riley last Thursday. Newcomer Bruce Miller, who
is displaying a great deal of potential, scored 18
points, as did George Davis, Greg Bell and Rodney
Simmons. Bell also took out the gross with 37
points. In the Associates section good friends Kaye
Farquhar and Bev Moyses both recorded 17 points.
Novelties were won by Ray Alp, Rod Simmons and Clive
Pullan.
***
Hudson
Hopewell also played very well last Tuesday when he
recorded 39 points to easily win Leisure Day.
***
18
Veterans played last Tuesday, with the winner being
Ross Brody from Bryan Simpson, Dave Brunswick taking
out third position. Also getting a mention were John
Mumme and Barry Sheppard. Novelties were won by
Brian Banks, Ross Brody, John Mumme and Bryan
Simpson.
***
Members
would be aware that the automatic reticulation
program has commenced and although there will be
some obvious disruption to play the long term gains
will far outweigh the short term pains.
***
This
Saturday an Italian meal will be available with
entertainment for the excellent value of $22 per
head. Booking sheet is on the Clubhouse notice
board.
***
Saturday
sees the second round of the club championship
played with sponsorship provided by the Premier
Hotel. Scroungers is on today with Veterans and
Leisure Day next Tuesday.
***
This
week the annual Solstice Event will be staged. An
excellent array of trophies will be available in a
number of categories, and with snacks and stayers it
is hoped players will remain for presentations. The
event is an individual Stableford. Scroungers is on
today with Veterans and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

Rakich and Edwards Take
Foursomes
Buckingham
Way neighbours Dean Rakich and Stephen Edwards
combined to play some excellent golf to take out the
Men’s Foursomes title last Saturday. The event was
sponsored by the D'Orien Café and attracted a field
of 44 players. It is a time honoured event and
Rakich and Edwards scored 80 gross, which was a very
good effort considering their handicaps and the
challenging nature of the game. In second place were
Greg Bell and Peter Rowe with 85 off the stick, with
Bell not able to conjure up enough magic to get them
across the line. Others to rate a mention in the
gross section included Ben Kononen and Luke
Bleasdale with 89 and Peter ‘D 11’ Slater and
John Brown with 90.
A
couple of old timers in Ed Riley and Frank Battista
also played well to win the nett section of the
event with 72, and their victory was very well
deserved. Wayne Waywood and Garry Dawson had 74.5,
as did the combination of Steve Farquhar and Joe
Italiano. Farquhar was a late replacement for Ray
Cooper, who after a big five points at Scroungers
claimed he sustained a small cut on one finger and
pulled out of the event, much to the relief of his
playing partner. Graham Williams and Alf Sanford had
75.5, as did Dave Brunswick and Tony Barker-May, to
round out the vouchers.
Novelties
were won by Luke Bleasdale and Garry Dawson for
nearest to pins while Jim Atkinson and Dean Rakich
won longest first putts. John Brown picked up the
long drive down 15.
Possibly
the play of the day would have to go to Peter Slater
for his windy on 17, where he missed making contact
with the ball by half a metre. However, Slater
showed extreme courage to actually finish the round,
as he played the last four holes suffering from
cramps in both legs. His playing partners thought
this may have been a result of kicking his
opposition’s ball further under a blackboy on the
second hole.
***
Peter
Gray continues to play outstanding golf, and last
Thursday he again turned it on when he took out
Scroungers with 21 points, and the gross with 35.
John Michalak finished second on a spin from Dean
Rakich and Dean Crowe. The course must have been
playing hard, as the Head Scrounger was forced to go
to 17 points, and the lucky recipients were Dave
Brunswick, Peter Rowe and Stumpy Ireland.
Novelties
were won by Neil Motion, Peter Gray and Les McGill.
Rhonda McGill took out the Associates with 17
points. Numbers continue to be good with 52 men and
5 Associates contesting the Thursday event.
***
Peter
Gray brought up the double when he was successful in
Veterans with 27 points. He won from Ray Alp, also
on 27 points. Hugh Annandale, John Mumme, Bryan
Simpson and Rob Ferris all cracked a mention for
their efforts. Novelties were won by Ray Alp, Rob
Ferris, Alf Sanford and Bryan Simpson.
***
Graham
Williams proved to be a better golfer than he is a
tennis judge when he scored 39 points to take out
Leisure Day. Hudson Hopewell continued his
consistent form when he recorded 35 points to take
out second position.
***
This
week the annual Solstice Event will be staged. An
excellent array of trophies will be available in a
number of categories, and with snacks and stayers it
is hoped players will remain for presentations. The
event is an individual Stableford. Scroungers is on
today with Veterans and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

Absolutely Brilliant Broadbent
David
Broadbent played a sensational round of golf to
record the remarkable score of 46 Stableford points
to blitz the field in the BankWest sponsored
individual event last Saturday. Broadbent’s golf
career has been plagued by a case of erratic
hooking, but he appears to have rectified this
technical problem and had his handicap reduced by a
huge four strokes. The nearest player to come close
to Broadbent was Jim Tyler, who recorded 38 points
in a round that must have impressed his visiting
sons-in-law. A host of players recorded 37 points,
including Joe Italiano, who took third place on a
countback from visitor Colin Brown, Ray Alp and the
in form Fred Bronickis. Dean Rakich, Greg Moyle and
Eric Annandale all recorded 36 points, which was the
CCR on a day when conditions were ideal for good
scoring. Les McGill played very well to earn 35
points and claim a voucher, as did Rocket Miller and
the evergreen Peter Gray.
The
field was 61 players and novelties were won by
Rodney Miller, Dean Rakich and Fred Bronickis for
nearest to pins while Rakich and Steve Farquhar
picked up longest first putts. ‘The Hammer’
Steve Wallace put one into orbit to take the long
drive down 15.
***
Wayne
‘Wedge’ Waywood returned to his accurate best to
return 20 points and take out Scroungers on a spin
from Graham Williams and the inconsistent George
Dorozenko. 18 points was enough for a voucher and
those to benefit included Phil Warburton, Hugh
Annandale, Neil Motion, Bill Hunter and Dean Rakich.
Novelties were won by Harry Hadfield, Ed Riley and
Graham Williams. 49 men and 6 Associates contested
the event, with Nancy Lynn and June Pike each
receiving a voucher for their 17 points.
***
The
talented Rodney Miller showed there is still some
sting in the tail when he chalked up 41 points to
win Leisure Day last Tuesday. Miller won from Hudson
Hopewell on 37 points and the semi retired Graham
Williams with 34 points.
***
Clive
Pullan played some excellent golf to record 33
points and easily win Veterans last week. Bryan
Simpson was second with 28 points with the in form
Frank Battista third on 27 points. Also in the mix
were Phil Warburton, Ross Brody and Dave Brunswick
all of whom came in with 25 points. Novelties were
won Frank Battista, Dave Brunswick, Les Udy and
Clive Pullan.
***
Michelle
Tate must enjoy a challenge, as not only has she
recently taken up the game, but now she is having to
put up with the extra burden of having husband Ken
passing on his vast knowledge of the game with
coaching sessions on a Sunday morning .
***
Coming
events include the Seafood Night with entertainment
in July and also Solstice Saturday on 16 June, with
prizes for both males and females. A sausage sizzle
and chips during the round, with food prior to
presentations, and novelties and stayers prizes,
make this an enjoyable day.
***
This
Saturday the Men’s Foursomes event will be played
over 18 holes. No combination stands out as likely
winners, and if Greg Bell can get up with Peter Rowe
as a partner, then he will be a magician.
Scroungers
is on today with Veterans and Leisure Day next
Tuesday.

Cooper Conquers Conditions
Ray
Cooper mastered the blustery playing conditions to
break through and claim victory in the Grandfathers
and Others Par event last Saturday. Cooper had the
impressive score of +4 to win well from Dean Rakich
who compiled a very tidy +2. If Rakich could master
the flat stick he is capable of shooting some very
low numbers. Rakich claimed a trophy as the best of
the others with all trophies sponsored by the
generous Ken Smallwood. Graeme Miffling also claimed
a trophy with his score of +1 which was also scored
by Hudson Hopewell and Graham Williams. Williams was
possibly the choke of the season so far in that he
had +5 on the front nine but fell away badly on the
last nine holes. Others to do well included Trizzy
Lawrence with square, Colin Brown, Greg Bell, Rod
Simmonds, Peter Rowe and Fred Bronickis all of whom
had -1.
Novelties
were won by Jim Tyler, Fred Bronickis and Dan
Clayton for nearest to pins while Les Udy and Ed
Riley claimed longest first putts. SS Kevin Ireland
blasted one down 15 to win the long drive .
It
was good to see the new Superintendent Daniel Tylor
having a game and also good to see players preparing
well for their games. Jim Atkinson is a good case in
point in that he arrived at the course 4 hours
before hit off.
***
Tony
Barker-May had a day out when he scored 21 points to
win Scroungers last Thursday. Barker-May has been in
very good form of late, and had two points to spare from
country member Jeff Lee. It could have been an even
bigger margin if Barker-May wasn't such a choker,
but he fell apart after notching up 18 points on the
first six holes, including birdies on three and six.
Mick Finlay, Dean Rakich
and John Mumme all had 18 points. Mumme at last
showed some semblance of form after a prolonged run
of very poor golf. Scoring was very low with 17
points getting a mention. These were Jeff Crowe and
Frank Battista. Novelties were won by Harry Hadfield
and Jeff Bebbington.
A
field of 44 men and 8 Associates contested the event
with Rhonda McGill, Betty White and Gwen Tanian
being the pick of the ladies with 13 points each.
***
Graham
Williams obviously enjoying the more relaxed nature
of Leisure Day scored an impressive 41 points to win
last Tuesday. Greg Martin had 38 points to run
second while Wayne Waywood ran third with 36 points.
***
Dave
Brunswick recorded 28 points to win Veterans last
Tuesday. He won from Ray Alp with 27 points Peter
Gray on 26 points, Ross Brody on 24 points and Les
McGill on 23.
Novelties
were won by Peter Gray, Ray Alp and Jeff Bebbington.
***
A
good contingent of Vets ventured over to Donnybrook
last Tuesday with Frank Battista having a big day by
scoring 43 points for a win.
***
Hopefully
this week will see the installation of the two
reverse cycle air conditioners which should make the
clubhouse a great deal more pleasant in the cold
winter months
***
Also
commencing shortly is work on the automatic
reticulation system for the back nine. Jim Atkinson
has taken on the task as chairman of this project
and any members who can assist should see Jim or
Steven Ireland.
***
The
Mens Foursomes will be played on Saturday 9th
of June with both gross and nett trophies available
for this testing partner game.

This
Saturday sees an 18 hole individual Stableford
competition for the BankWest trophies. Scroungers is

Bleasdale Wins Well
Young
up and coming player Luke Bleasdale made the most of
morning conditions to score 41 points and take out
the Suckling Financial Services trophy last
Saturday. His playing partner Ben Kononen also
played very well to record 40 points and take the
runner up trophy. The evergreen Peter Gray continues
to play well and his 38 points was enough for third
place. A host of players recorded 37 points
including Ron Annandale, Garry Dawson, Greg Bell,
Troy Sheppard and Ron Crabbe. Frank Battista, Ed
Riley and Kalev Kutt all recorded 36 points while
Dan Clayton and Trizzy Lawrence both had 35 points.
Novelties
winners were Graeme Miffling, Peter Gray and Frank
Battista for nearest to pins while Brett Smith and
Clive Pullan took out longest first putts.
Competition winner Luke Bleasdale won the long drive
down 15.
On
a day when conditions were quite cold and wet
apparently the only hot spot on the course was
number three green. The event attracted the good
field of 56 players and the course was rated at 71.
***
Mick
Pokrywka enjoyed a rare win when he recorded 21
points to beat head Scrounger Ed Riley on a spin
last Thursday. Tony Barker-May continued his good
form of late to have 20 points. Graham Williams also
had 20 points which was a performance full of merit
considering his preparation on the day prior to the
event. Ross Brody scored 19 points while Ron
Annandale, Jim Tyler, Ray Alp, Alan Banks and new
member Bruce Miller all recorded 18 points. Miller
demonstrated he possesses a fine all round game and
it should not be long before he salutes the judge.
Novelties were won by Greg Bell, Ed Riley and Ray
Cooper.
A
total of 55 men and 5 Associates played, with
Shelley Barker-May taking out the Associates section
with a very well compiled 20 points.
***
Hudson
Hopewell continued his dominance of Tuesday Leisure
Day competition when he had an excellent 38 points
to win easily from country member Keith Russell and
Dennis Cocker. Both of these players scored 33
points.
***
The
different format of only two clubs and a putter
obviously suited Alan Banks when he recorded 30
points to win Veterans last Tuesday. He beat Jeff
Crowe and Alf Sanford, who both had 28 points. Frank
Battista also did well to finish with 27 points.
Novelties were won by Jim Tyler, Phil Warburton and
Frank Battista.
***
This
Saturday there will be a meal available at the club.
It represents very good value at $22 per head with
entertainment, and there is a list on the
noticeboard.
***
Those
players who still wish to nominate for the Eclectic
competition can still do so simply by seeing a
member of the match committee.

trophy sponsored by Ken Smallwood. It is an

Trizzy Tears It Up
Trevor
Lawrence wound the clock back to his halcyon days
when he fired 75 off the stick to take out the
Collie Freightlines 18 hole Stroke Trophy last Saturday. Lawrence
has had a great run of late, playing in great form,
and his nett score of 66 gave him a two stroke
buffer over a group of four players. This group
included runner up Dennis Cocker, Brett Smith , Dean
Rakich and Rodney Simmonds. Cocker took second place
by virtue of a countback.
Others
to feature on a day of low scoring included Jeff
Crowe, David Pullan, Tony Barker-May and Eric
Annandale all of whom recorded excellent 70s -
Barker-May birdying 10 and 18 to give him a great
start to the Eclectic competition.
Charlie Serravite and Matt Harker both had 71 while
Jim Tyler and John Brown rounded out the vouchers
with solid 72s.
Lawrence
with his 75 gross has emerged as the early leader of
the club championships as Saturday’s round doubled
up as the first round of the championships.
On
a beautiful day for golf a great field of 61 players
took part and the benign conditions were reflected
in the low CCR of 70. It was very good to see
players who don’t usually play Stroke rounds come
and do well in terms of scoring. Of course, there
were some notable exceptions to this, and probably
less said the better on their performance.
Novelties
were won by Matt Harker and Ray Cooper for nearest
to pins, Jim Atkinson and Jaydon Ellery for longest
putts while Dean Rakich took out the long drive down
number 5. Actually Ray Cooper won nearest the pin
for both number 7 and 14. With that form one would
have thought Cooper was in for a big day. He was
indeed, but for all the wrong reasons when he
chalked up a massive 15 on number 3 - using three
different clubs in trying to get one down the
fairway, but stroking four tee shots into the river. Little wonder
his group finished in near darkness. Not far behind
Cooper was Clive Pullan, who struck three identical
tee shots into the same riverbank tree before his
fourth found the short green grass on his way to a
round-ruining 12.
***
The
sartorially elegant George Dorozenko relished the
change in the usual Scroungers format to amass 24
points and easily win the event last Thursday. He
held off Charlie Serravite who had 22 points and a
large group of players who finished with 20 points
each. Included in this group were Tony Barker-May,
Eric Annandale, Bill Hunter and Michael Stocks. Alan
Banks, Ed Riley, Frank Battista, Ron Annandale and
Ross Davidson also played well to record 19 points
and receive a voucher. Novelties were won by Troy
Sheppard, Dave Brunswick and Gwen Tanian. Best of
the Associates was Pat Booth with 19 points followed
by Nancy Lynn with 17 points.
***
Current
club champion Hudson Hopewell had a sensational day
out last Tuesday when he had 69 off the stick - only
a stroke off the official course record - and 43
points to win Leisure Day. Hopewell wishes he could
have taken that form into the club championships
where he faltered over the last seven holes to
record a first round 77. Others to perform well were
SS Kevin Ireland with 36 points and Steven Ireland
and Garry Dawson who both recorded 35 points.
***
Peter
Gray maintained his consistent form when he scored
32 points to win Veterans last Tuesday. He won from
Dave Brunswick on 27 points, while Frank Battista and
Ray Alp both had 23 points. Alan Banks and Ian Jones
also received a mention for their 22 points.
Novelties were won by Dave Brunswick, Peter Gray,
Ian Jones and Ray Alp.
***
Members
are reminded of the meal after golf on the 26th of
May as well as the Seafood night coming up on the
27th of July.

Tyler and Annandale Record Big
Win
A
rejuvenated Jim Tyler and rampaging Eric Annandale
blitzed the field to record a great win in the
Subway 4BBB Stableford competition held last
Saturday. Annandale, who played far better than his
football team, and Tyler, who has been out of form
of late, combined very well to amass 50 points to
finish three clear of their nearest rivals.
Finishing second on a countback were the combination
of Ash Stewart and Mick Dowling. Stewart, obviously
in good condition after his honeymoon, and Dowling
finished with birdies on 17 and 18 to pip Kalev Kutt
and Mick Findlay.
In
fourth place also on a countback were the
combination of Bill Hunter and Dean Rakich. They
finished with 43 points, as did Wayne Waywood and
Graham Williams, Ray Alp and Jim Hine, and Barry
Kononen and Hudson Hopewell.
Novelties
were won by Hudson Hopewell, Graeme Miffling and
Wayne Waywood for nearest to pins, while Dave
Brunswick and Ian Stewart took long putts. Hudson
Hopewell also won the long drive down 5.
A
good field of 30 pairs contested the event on a day
when conditions were perfect for golf. Scott
Chambers left a going away present with some very
interesting pin placements. The only time a breeze
came was on 17 when vice captain Garry Dawson
created one with his club from under a shrub.
It
was good to see Peter Slater get into the spirit of
the World Cup cricket by dressing the part, and some
of his shots were reminiscent of Ricky Ponting at
his best.
Wayne
Waywood came up with a novel yet effective way to
overcome Ray Cooper’s incessant whistling, humming
and chattering by issuing his playing partners with
ear plugs.
Warren
Colgan representing Subway, presented the trophies,
and it was good to see Ray Colgan back at the club
for trophy presentations.
Also
Subway have elected to take over sponsorship of the
nearest the pin on hole 14.
***
David
Broadbent celebrated his best on ground performance
in the reserves football by backing up with an
outstanding performance to come in with 24 points
and easily win Scroungers last week. Broadbent has
been in good form of late, and appears to have
overcome his problem of hooking every shot. In
second place on a spin was Bill Hunter, from the
talented Michael Stocks. Greg Bell, Neil Richards
and Dean Rakich all had 19 points to claim a
voucher.
Greg
Bell also took out the gross with 37 off the stick.
Novelties were won by Jim Hine, Bryan Simpson and
Ron Annandale.
A
total of 55 men and five Associates contested the
event, with Bev Moyses being the best of the
Associates with 20 points.
This
week’s Scroungers will be an interesting concept,
all players hitting off the mens’ tees on even
numbered holes and off the ladies’ tees on the odd
numbered holes.
***
Les
Udy had 26 points to take out the Veterans
competition last Tuesday. He beat Jeff Crowe who
also had 26 points, Ern Sullivan with 25 points, and
Peter Gray on 24 points.
Novelties
went to Jeff Crowe, Peter Gray, Bryan Simpson and
Jim Hine.
***
The
club would like to welcome our new superintendent
Daniel Tyler and hope he has an enjoyable and
rewarding stay with the club.
***
The
club hosted another meal and entertainment night
last Saturday, with all reports that the food again
was beautiful and the singing by Kristi Brown was
first class. Possibly the only low point of the
evening was with Dean Rakich’s attempts to relive
his past from Stars of the Future with a very
ordinary rendition of Travelling Soldier. Apparently
Kevin Ireland was very impressed.
***

competition and the first round of the club
championships. The game on Saturday will be
sponsored by Collie Freightlines. Scroungers is on

Simmonds takes out Life
Members Trophy
Rodney
Simmonds tasted victory for the first time in a
while when he took out the prize in the Life Members
individual Par event last Saturday. Simmonds
recorded plus 3 to win from a host of players on
plus 2. One of the trophy donors, Trizzy Lawrence,
actually returned the best score of the day with
plus 4, but declined to accept the trophy. A good
field of 55 men and 10 Associates contested the
event held in beautiful conditions and the CCR was
71. Greg Bell eventually took out the trophy for
second place on a countback from Stephen Farquhar,
Ron Annandale and Charlie Serravite. Graeme Jackson
, Phil Eldridge, John Brown, Graeme Miffling and
Brett Smith all played well to finish with plus 1.
Clive Pullan and Peter ‘Par’ Slater also did
well to finish with square.
The
best of the Associates was Vicki Graham, who won on
a countback from Nancy Lynn and Bev Moyses. All of
these ladies returned square.
Novelties
were won by Rod Simmonds, Ron Crabbe and Ron
Annandale for nearest to pins, while Bev Moyses and
Bryan Simpson took out longest first putts. Kalev
Kutt won the long drive down number 5.
On
the day a number of players struggled to come to
terms with their game, including Ross Davidson, one
of the club’s habitual slicers, who suddenly
developed a hook into his shots and his score
reflected the step into the unknown.
***
Last
Wednesday the annual Diggers Day was held with 35
golfers contesting the event sponsored by John and
Barbara Wray. The competition is divided into
‘diggers’ and others, with Ben McCormick having
a day out to claim victory in the others section
with the very good score of 43 points. He just beat
the in form ‘bridesmaid’ Ian Annandale, who
finished with 42 points. Greg Bell continued his
good form with 40 points and Mark Malatesta did well
with 38 points. Steven Ireland displayed glimpses of
form to have 37 points with Stephen Farquhar, Joe
Italiano and Wayne Waywood all having 36 points to
claim a voucher.
In
the Diggers section John Wray returned the best
score of 38 points to take out the event and have
his name added to the prestigious shovel. He
declined to accept his own trophy, which went to Ed
Riley with 36 points. Alf Sanford continued his good
form of recent times to claim a voucher together
with Alan Kent. Both of these players had 35 points.
Novelties
were won by Bill Hunter, Phil Warburton and Ben
McCormick for nearest to pins, while Alf Sanford and
Ron Annandale took out long putts. Kevin Ireland
latched onto a big one to take out the long drive.
***
Country
member Norm Oates enjoyed the golf and the day when
he played well to win Scroungers last Thursday.
Oates had 20 points to win on a spin from Dave
Brunswick and Graham Williams. Ray Cooper returned
with 19 points to claim a voucher and Ron Crabbe,
Eric Annandale, Phil Warburton and Peter Walsh all
had 18 points to also win a prize.
The
best gross was returned by Ben Kononen with 39 off
the stick. Novelties were won by Dick Earl, Fred
Bronickis and Des Hebb.
50
men and 4 Associates contested the event with Nancy
Lynn being the best of the Associates with 17
points.
Following
Scroungers a presentation was made to Scott
Chambers, who is off to Capel. Scott has done a
wonderful job as Superintendent and the club wishes
him all the best for the future.
***
The
Veterans experienced a change of scenery when they
ventured over the river to play at Eden Park last
Tuesday.
Alf
Sanford returned from a time in the golfing
wilderness to take out the event with 47 points. He
won from Les Udy on 46 points and Dick Earl with 44
points. Ross Brody and Jim Hine both had 40 points
while George Davis finished with 39 points. Ray Alp
and Ed Riley both had 38 points Novelties were won
Ed Riley, George Davis, Des Hebb and Jim Hine.

Malatesta Salutes The Judge
One
of the club’s new young members, Blair Malatesta,
launched his golf career in spectacular style when
he took out the Edwards Racing 18 hole Stroke event
last Saturday. Malatesta, who has proven his
sporting prowess on the football and cricket fields,
showed he will have no trouble adapting to the golf
clubs when he shot 87 off the stick for a nett 66.
Ian Annandale has had a big turnaround in his golf
of late and again produced an excellent round with a
nett 67 to take second position. His round included
a great eagle on the par 4 fifteenth hole when he
holed his 140 metre approach shot. Ben Kononen had
68 nett which was combined with the best gross of
the day of 74. The dapper Joe Italiano finished with
71 nett as did Peter Gray and Hudson Hopewell. Ray
Cooper, Jaydon Ellery, Frank Battista, George Davis,
Dean Rakich and Tiger Jackson all played well to
finish with 72 nett. Stephen Farquhar and David
Pullan rounded out the vouchers with 73 each.
Novelties
were won by Mark Sugget and Hudson Hopewell for
nearest to pins while Jim Atkinson and David
Broadbent claimed longest first putts. Hudson
Hopewell smashed a giant down 5 to win the long
drive.
In
the Associates Betty White was the winner with 74 on
a countback from Vicki Graham with Kaye Farquhar
running third with 76.
The
field of 61 men and 7 Associates played in ideal
conditions and the CCR of 72 was a good indication
of a course set up perfectly for a stroke round.
***
Rob
Ferris played some excellent golf to record 21
points and win Scroungers on a spin from Peter Gray
and Ray Cooper. John Wray and Dean Rakich both had
20 points while Gerard Pullan and Greg Bell had 19
points to receive a voucher. Ben Kononen took out
the gross honours with 38 off the stick.
Novelties
were won by Peter Gray, John Wray and Rob Ferris
while the best of the Associates was Kaye Farquhar
with 20 points
***
Paul

dance he was performing on the tee after his drive.
Ash Hollins also drove his partners to drink with
his wayward golf and his golf shoes that make more
noise than a cane toad.

David
Laird had a day to remember when he had 44 points to
take out Leisure Day last Tuesday. On a day of high
scoring Hudson Hopewell had 41 points with David
Broadbent finishing third with 38 points.

points to easily win Veterans last Tuesday. Des Hebb

Atkinson in A Canter
The
long hitting Jim Atkinson (right) returned to form in a big
way when he recorded +6 to easily win the Par event
sponsored by the Workers Club last Saturday. There
aren’t too many in the club who would hit a bigger
ball than Atkinson and when he controls his accuracy
– as he did on Saturday, when the draw was really
working beautifully - he is more than capable of
returning very good numbers.
The second placed Peter
Rowe had +3 and in contrast to Atkinson, does not
gain a great deal of distance off the tee but relies
on his deft touch around the greens. With +1, club
champion Hudson Hopewell took third place on a
countback from the rapidly improving Jaydon Ellery,
Ian Annandale, Greg Bell and Eric Annandale. Hugh
and Ron Annandale, Des Hebb, Peter Slater and Mick
Findlay finished square to each claim a voucher.
40
men and five Associates took part in the event, and
the best of the Associates was Bev Moyses with +2,
from Betty White and Jill Burgess who both finished
on +1.
Novelties
were won by Bill Nicholas and Eileen Riley for
nearest the pins on the par threes, while Bruce
Roberts and Steve Farquhar claimed longest putt
novelties. Jaydon Ellery once again won the long
drive down five.
***
On
a day of exceptionally high scoring the cut off for
a prize was 21 points in Scroungers last Thursday.
Fred Bronickis continued on with his very good form
of late to come home as the winner with 23 points.
Clive Pullan, who played superbly, let down only by
three three putts, claimed second position on a spin
from Greg Bell and Ken Woods with 22 points.
Rounding out the vouchers were Stephen Ireland, John
Michalak and Ron Annandale all of whom recorded 21
points.
Winners
of novelties were Dick Earl ,Des Hebb and George
Davis.
Greg
Bell took out the gross with 18.
The
high scoring in the men wasn’t matched by the
ladies with the best being Angela Ireland and Betty
White finishing with 16 points apiece.
***
Dean
Rakich took advantage of the holidays to play
Leisure Day and record a win with 39 points. He beat
David Broadbent who finished with 35 points. The
word around was that there were more anchors being
thrown around than you would see in Fremantle
Harbour.
***
Frank
Battista is enjoying a rare vein of form at the
moment and he continued on his way taking out the
Veterans last Tuesday with the excellent score of 32
points. He won well from Des Hebb who scored 28
points and is also working back into form. Alan
Banks ran third with 27 points from Phil Warburton,
Ernie Sullivan, Ed Riley and Rob Ferris, all of whom
recorded 26 points. Alan Kent had 25 points to also
rate a mention.
Novelties
were won by Phil Warburton, Ray Alp and Frank
Battista.
***
In
his own words Trizzy Lawrence said ‘the older I
get the sillier I get’, and this could well be
true after he played some sensational golf on Easter
Monday to record +7. This great piece of golf was
rewarded with a magnificent $10 voucher, and he
easily beat Jim Atkinson who finished on -1.
***

Bronickis Takes Out Easter
Event
‘Super
Fred’ Bronickis played exceptional golf to record
41 points and easily win last Saturday’s
Stableford event sponsored by the Golf Club. Lately
it seems you should use a cart if you want to ensure
a victory in a competition. Bronickis beat a
revitalised Ray Cooper, who always entertains his
playing partners by whistling a tune throughout his
round. Cooper had the good score of 39 points on a
day when the field was 45 players and the course
played to its par of 72.
Big
hitting duo Jim Atkinson and Trizzy Lawrence both
had 37 points while well known local footballers
Mark Williams and David Broadbent each had 36
points. Evergreen Ron Annandale recorded 35 points
to round out the vouchers, while Tony Barker-May,
Frank Battista, Brett Smith, Peter Gray and Dean
Rakich all had 34 points.
Jill
Burgess again was the winner of the Associates with
37 points, from Maureen Earl on 33 points.
Novelties
were won by Garry Dawson and Jim Atkinson for
nearest the pins, while Leigh Bernardi and Ray
Cooper won longest first putts. Kalev Kutt won the
long drive down five.
***
A
good field of 50 contested Scroungers last Thursday
with the enigmatic Kevin Ireland having one of his
good days to record 24 points to edge out Ash
Stewart by one point. Peter Rowe returned to form
after suffering wretched form for the past month to
have 22 points and claim third place. Head Scrounger
Ed Riley recorded a solid 21 points while Ben
Kononen played well to have 20 points. Peter Gray,
Frank Battista and Norm Oates all had 19 points each
to claim a voucher. Novelties were won by Jeff
Bebbington, Ed Riley and Owen Isbel. It is good to
see ‘Doc’ Isbel making a most welcome return
visit to the course where he spent many enjoyable
hours during his time in Collie. Three players tied
for the gross with 17, and these were Peter Rowe,
Ash Stewart and Ben Kononen.
***
The
Stewart brothers Chris and Ash tied for honours in
last Tuesday’s Leisure Day competition. Both
recorded 36 points, but elder brother Chris took the
prize on countback. Ash has been playing a good deal
of golf of late, and maybe he is enjoying his last
days of freedom before he ties the knot this
Saturday.
Frank
Battista took the honours with 26 points in Veterans
last Tuesday.
John
Wray and Ray Alp also played well to both have 26
points and finish second and third. Ed Riley had 25
points, with Alan Banks and Des Hebb both recording
24 points for a mention.
Novelties
were won by Ray Alp, Jeff Crowe, Dick Earl and Phil
Warburton.
***
The
Saturday Eagle's Nest now sits at 18, which would be
a very nice reward for someone recording an elusive
eagle.
***
This
week’s event is an 18 hole individual Par
sponsored by the Collie Club. Scroungers is on today
with Veterans and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

Giblett Drives
To Victory
(subtitled
.... Kononens Give The Rest Of Us A Break)
Colin Giblett, who recently joined the growing cart
brigade, scored 41 points to take out the annual
Mafia Cup played last Saturday on a countback from
Joe Italiano.
Giblett,
who played very well in all aspects of his game, and
Italiano, rapidly coming to terms with the new
sticks recently purchased after his golfing foray in
Malaysia, had a one shot buffer over Graeme
‘Tiger’ Jackson, who was playing his first game
on the links in a considerable time.
The
ever consistent Ron Annandale (left) came in with 39 points
from Ben Kononen on 38 points and David Laird and
Dave Brunswick, each with 37 points to round out the
A grade section of the competition.
Graham
Miffling recorded 39 points to take out the B grade
section of the competition. He won from David Pullan
who amassed 38 points to take second place on a
countback from Garry Dawson and Ed Riley. Club
President Ian Stewart finished with 37 points, as
did Des Hebb and Charlie Serravite.
59
players took part in the popular event, and the good
scoring was reflected in the CCR of 70.
Best
of the six Associates who took part was Betty
Sheppard with 35 points, from Jill Burgess with 32
points.
There
was a vast array of novelties on offer and the
winners included Ian Stewart, Peter Gray, Hugh
Annandale, Ben Kononen, Dan Clayton, Betty Sheppard
and Des Hebb for longest putts, while Dave
Brunswick, David Laird and Greg Bell received
nearest to pins novelties. Paul Aramini belted one
down five to win the long drive.
***
A
field of 62 took part in Thursday’s Scroungers,
and Scott Chambers with 20 points was the winner on
a spin from Charlie Serravite, Ron Crabbe, George
Dorozenko and Barry McGill. Des Hebb finished with a
solid 19 points, as did Ernie Sullivan, Ed Riley and
Les McGill.
Barry
McGill took out the gross with 35. Novelties were
won by Ray Alp and Stephen Farquhar.
The
Associates was taken out by Kaye Farquhar with 20
points from Bev Moyses on 19 points.
***
Graham
Williams, enjoying his last days of freedom before
returning to the workforce, celebrated by scoring a
mediocre 35 points to win Leisure Day last Tuesday.
He won on a countback from Rod Miller.
***
The
genial Dave Brunswick took out Veterans last
Tuesday. Brunswick scored 29 point to win easily
from Frank Battista on 23 points and Ross Brody,
Bryan Simpson and Jeff Bebbington, all of whom
finished with 22 points.
Novelties
were won by Frank Battista, Dave Brunswick, Jeff
Bebbington and Ernie Sullivan.
***
The
hard working Associates President received a shock
last week when she read in the Collie Mail that she
is now the ladies bowls president.
***
The
search continues for a new superintendent with the
club now in the process of hopefully finding a
suitable candidate to take over from Scott Chambers,
who is moving to Capel to oversee ‘three and a
half’ staff.
***
This
Saturday sees an 18 hole individual Stableford event
sponsored by the club. Monday will be an 18 hole par
sweepstakes with Veterans and Leisure Day next
Tuesday. Scroungers is on as usual on Thursday.

Kononens
Win Again
The
old adage “you reap what you sow” was in
evidence again last Saturday when the father and son
combination of Barry and Ben Kononen took out the
Solstice group 2 person combined Stableford event.
The Kononens spend a great deal of time fine tuning
their games and they amassed 80 points to street
their nearest rivals in Dean Rakich and Bill Hunter
by 6 points. Both the Kononens had 40 points apiece
and again made inroads into their handicaps. In
third place were Greg Bell and Ian Annandale who
also had 74 points but were beaten on a countback.
Others to feature included Jaydon Ellery and Mark
McCormick and another father son combination of
Trevor McCormick and Ben McCormick with 71 points
for each pair. Hugh Annandale and Fred Bronickis
were travelling easily until they let the pressure
get to them and they fell away to finish on 70
points. Ron Annandale and Stephen Farquhar did well
to have 67 points as did Rob Cavanagh and Dean
Crowe. Rounding out the vouchers were Tony
Barker-May and Dave Brunswick and Brian Banks and
Eric Annandale with 66 points per pair.
Novelties
were won by Bill Hunter, Bev Moyses and Ben Kononen
for nearest to pins while Dick Earl and Ash Hollins
picked up longest first putts. The long drive was
once again won by Jaydon Ellery.
Kaye
Farquhar returned the good score of 38 points to
take out the Associates prize followed by the
consistent Jill Burgess with 35 points.
Peter
“ Nikki” Rowe had a miserable day in contrast to
his gala day at cricket last week. Rowe could only
manage a very poor 21 individual points to grab the
solstice jacket.
***
Last
Sunday the club played host to the annual Mining
Industry Golf Challenge. A good field of 32 teams
took part in the well organized and popular Ambrose
event. On a long day on the links Alcoa Refinery 1
emerged victors over Argyle Diamonds 2 to take home
the prestigious trophy. The day was very successful
with excellent feedback on the food prepared by the
ladies and with plenty of good cheer consumed as
well.
***
New
member Rhett Williamson, who was Association
Cricketer of the Year, showed he has great potential
with the golf clubs scored 22 points to win
Scroungers last Thursday. He just beat sweet
swinging but occasional shanking Kevin Ireland and
Ben Kononen . Both these players recorded 21 points
apiece. David Broadbent, George Dorozenko and Hugh
Annandale all finished with 20 points while Paul
Aramini, Greg Bell, Peter Slater and Ray McGill had
19 points.
Ben
Kononen took out the gross with 36 while novelties
were won by Neil Richards, Blair Malatesta, Ash
Hollins and Hugh Annandale.
Best
of the Associates was Gwen Tanian with 15 points.
***
Jim
Tyler with 27 points took out Veterans last Tuesday
from Peter Gray who had 25 points. Steve Farquhar
and Ray Alp each had 23 points to receive a mention
also. Novelties went to Peter Gray, Ray Alp, Dave
Brunswick and Harry Banks.
***
Some
people have no shame and so it was with one club
member who filled in during the year at cricket and
amassed the grand tally of one run, but had no
hesitation in lining up in the premiership photo
with the rest of the victorious team.
***
The
Mafia Cup will be played this Saturday. It is an 18
hole individual Stableford event and the godfathers
have assured excellent prizes will be on offer.
Scroungers as usual today with Leisure Day and
Veterans next Tuesday.

Tuckey
Takes Out Riverside Open
Pinjarra
golfer Paul Tuckey claimed the 2007 Riverside Open
after an absorbing final day battle with Capel
player Rob Hewison. Hewison fought back from a five
shot overnight deficit to be square with one hole
remaining .
Hewison
found the middle of the fairway with his drive up
the last while Tuckey was in the short rough. Tuckey
played a magnificent wedge into the green to leave
himself a three metre putt. Hewison hit the green
but spun off and his resulting chip left him with a
knock in par. Tuckey rolled his putt in for birdie
and his first Riverside title. His two round total
was 143 with Hewison one stroke adrift. Ron Crabbe
with 153 took third place in the gross, while 15
year old Jamie Warman from Gosnells claimed fourth
in the gross with a total of 154.
Collie’s
Ben Kononen played sensational golf all weekend to
record rounds of 65 and 66 nett to claim victory in
the nett section. In fact Kononen played so well he
threatened to pull off the double with victory in
the gross section as well. Paul Aramini also played
exceptional golf to finish with a pair of 66s and
take out the runner up prize. Phil Warman with a
total of 136 claimed third place, while Dan Clayton
with 138 did very well to finish fourth.
Saturday’s
individual gross honours went to Cliff Smith with
Warren Colgan being runner up. Trevor Graham from
Kwinana took out the nett trophy for Saturday, with
Rob Osborne runner up.
Rob
Hogan from Busselton was the winner of the gross for
Sunday, with Shaye Trezise finishing second. Clive
Pullan with a magnificent 64 nett claimed nett
honours for Sunday while the excitable Phil
Warburton was runner up with 67.
Overall
the event attracted a field of 191 players, and as
well as being treated with a top class course,
participants also enjoyed some high class
entertainment and first class hospitality for the
weekend. The club wishes to thank the sponsors, the
Coverley family and Wesfarmers Premier Coal, for
their generous and greatly appreciated sponsorship.
***
The
Riverside Open was preceded by the TBS fourball Par

Kwinana duo Brendon Green and Murrat Putland. Jeff
Chen and Wayne Ovenden did well to finish third. The
gross event was won by Rob Hewison and Shaye Trezise
from Greg Tuckey and Dale Watts. In third position

claim the gross. Kaye Farquhar was the best of the
Associates with 16 points, while novelties for the
day were won by Ross Davidson, Rob Cavanagh and
Michael Stocks.

Kononens Take Out The Quinella
Barry
Kononen played an outstanding round of golf to
record 43 points and just edge out son Ben to win
the Golf DownUnder 18 hole Stableford event last
Saturday. The Kononens put a lot of work into their
respective games and their successes are well
deserved. Popular member George Davis, Ray Cooper
and new member Jaydon Ellery all recorded 42 points
on a day of very good scoring. Troy Sheppard did
well to manage 41 points and course superintendent
Scott Chambers 40 points. Visitor Jacob Sewell,
Chris Stewart, Peter Rowe, Paul Aramini, all had 38
points and on a generous day Hudson Hopewell, Ed
Riley, Dean Rakich, Trevor Lawrence and Mat Harker

Best
of the Associates was Jill Burgess with 32 points.
Jill is having a very rewarding summer season and
she won from Maureen Earl who came in with 29 points
for a voucher.
Novelties
were won by Garry Dawson, Peter Gray and Kalev Kutt
for nearest to pins while Colin Sussex and Stumpy
Ireland picked up longest putt novelties. Jaydon
Ellery won the long drive novelty.
A
total of 69 men and 6 Associates contested the event
on a day when conditions were perfect for golf.
There
was a definite case of the Coopawobbles last
Saturday with Ray Cooper recording a massive 26
points on the front nine before collapsing on the
back nine to limp home with a miserable 16 points.
Also
playing was a preseason challenge between the Saints
and a composite team. The well dressed Saints boys
got up after Peter Slater cracked and three putted
on the penultimate hole.
***
Scoring
was always going to be high in the Mulligan day at
Scroungers last Thursday. David Broadbent, Alan
Davies, Graham Williams and Ash Stewart all had 24
points with the winners being decided by a spin.
There was a brace of players with 22 points
including Clive Pullan, Jeff Crowe, Rod Simmonds,
Scott Chambers, Barry Kononen , Bill Hunter and
Peter Rowe to round out voucher payments.
Novelties
were won by Ron Annandale, Rod Simmonds , Skinny
Russell, Alan Davies and Scott Chambers.
Best
of the Associates was Nancy Lynn with 21 points. 63
men and 4 Associates contested the different and
forgiving game.
***
Hudson
Hopewell warmed up for Riverside when he amassed 39
points to win Leisure Day last Tuesday. He beat
country member Keith Russell who had 35 points on a
very warm afternoon.

only 8 players contested the event. Alan Davies with
21 points won on a spin from Jim Hine. Peter Gray
had 20 points to take third place. Novelties were
won by Dave Brunswick and Peter Gray.
***
Last
Saturday night a good crowd enjoyed a beautiful meal
and great music provided by Barry Kononen. Barry can
not only play good golf as evidenced by his win but
he is also an extremely talented musician. The club
hopes to continue these nights at different times
during the year.
***
As
people will be aware this weekend is the Riverside
Open and fourball on Friday. With the course in
tremendous condition it promises to a weekend of top

McCormick Makes It Look Easy
The
red hot Trevor McCormick continued his run of
outstanding golf to easily take out the Malatesta
Brother’s 18 hole Par event last Saturday.
McCormick returned the excellent score of 8 up and
his near faultless display had his playing partners
trying to remember if they had ever witnessed a
better round of golf. Don’t worry about McCormick
taking out the nett at this months Riverside, get on
him for the gross. Ken Tate also played an
outstanding round to finish with +6 and take out
second position. Gerard Pullan, David Broadbent and
Ben Kononen all had plus 5 on a day highlighted by
good scores on a perfect day for golf. Others to
feature included Trizzy Lawrence on 4 up, Hudson
Hopewell, Eric Annandale, Ian Annandale, Chris
Bliss, Fred Bronickis, Laurens Britz, Ray Cooper and
Neil Motion all on +2 and a voucher each.
The
good conditions were reflected in the CCR which was
70 on a day that saw 64 men and 6 Associates contest
the event. Best of the Associates was Jill Burgess
with 1 down, who beat Kaye Farquhar on a countback.
Novelties
were won by Chris Bliss, Ben Kononen and John Brown
for nearest to pins while Eric Annandale and George
Gray claimed longest first putts. Ian Annandale
smashed one down 5 to take the long drive novelty.
Alf
Sanford had the dubious honour of taking out the
NAGA and in doing so made it a rare trifecta for
this prize in this event. But as Alf said, at least
he walks away with a trophy.
***
John
Wray had 39 off the stick and 19 points to win a low
scoring Scroungers last Thursday. Ray Alp and Colin
Naysmith both had 18 points each while Ernie
Sullivan, Dean Crowe, Jim Atkinson, Rod Simmonds and
Bill Hunter all recorded 17 points to claim a
voucher. The field of 44 was very good considering
it rained for most of the day.
Whether
it was talk of anchors last week but it must have
had an affect on Eric “Bullant “ Annandale.
After amassing 16 points with 3 holes to play, he
did the old heave ho - or was it simply a last quarter
fade out?
Today
will see Scroungers Mulligan Day. This popular game
allows players to replay one shot per hole without
penalty. With full handicaps scoring is sure to be
high on a day of extra novelties and prizes.
***
Players
in last Tuesday’s Leisure Day found conditions
tough when Clayton Flynn took out the event from
Leon Moran and Ken Russell. All three finished with
35 points on a day when the CCR was 74.
***
Peter
Gray with 27 points took out the Veterans
Competition last Tuesday from Dave Brunswick who
also finished with 27 points. Phil Warburton, Ross
Brody, Jim Hine and Steve Farquhar all had 26
points, while Alf Sanford and Jeff Crowe rounded out
the prizes with 24 points apiece.
Novelties
were won by Phil Warburton, Dave Brunswick and Dick
Earl.
***
The
Graham Williams case continues with reports that he
has been seen doing pre-season training with the
Collie Eagles.
***
A
busy bee will be held this Sunday commencing at
8.00am. Members are urged to attend to assist Scott
and put the finishing touches on what is already an
outstanding golf course for the club’s most
prestigious event of the year, the Riverside Open,
which will be played the following weekend.
***
This
Saturday sees an 18 hole individual Stableford event
sponsored by Golf DownUnder. Very good prizes are on
offer, and there will be a meal on offer after the
game. It will be an Italian meal and for only $20 it
offers great value as the quality of the food is
outstanding. Those intending to have a meal are
asked to put their name on the list on the
noticeboard. Scroungers Mulligan Day is on today
with Veterans and Leisure Day next Tuesday.

New
Clubs Pay Off For Annandale
Ian
Annandale continued his recent resurgence to play
impeccable golf and take out the Scroungers Girls’
stroke event played last Saturday. Since acquiring a
new set of clubs Annandale has turned his game
around with some beautiful iron striking and a more
controlled mental approach. He had an excellent 66
nett which gave him a two stroke buffer over Dean
Crowe and Stephen Farquhar. Crowe managed to take
second place by way of a countback. 53 men and 15
Associates contested the event, which was played in
very windy conditions and the CCR was 71. Matt
Harker, Phill Warburton, Ben Kononen and Charlie
Serravite all had 70s, Joe Italiano and Trevor
Lawrence 71 each, Scott Hunter, Trevor McCormick, Ed
Riley and Laurens Britz rounded out the vouchers
with 73 apiece.
The
Associates section was taken out by Kaye Farquhar
with an excellent 72 nett from Bev Moyses, Jill
Burgess and Nancy Lynn, all of whom had 75. Gwen
Tanian also cracked a mention for her 77.
The
best gross was recorded by Scott Hunter with 71 off
the stick.
There
was a wide range of novelties available with an
interesting least number of putts. This was taken
out by Phil Warburton with only 25 putts. He edged
out Ian Jones on a countback.
Other
novelties were won by Bev Moyses, Garry Dawson, and
David Pullan for nearest to pins and George Gray and
Jim Hine for longest first putts. Scott Hunter won
the long drive down 5.
A
special award went to Associates President Lesley
Motion, who had an unheard of eight putts on the
relatively straightforward sixth green. The only
positive aspect was the way she was able to hold her
composure during the whole episode. However, hers
was not the only notable less than average
performance. Tony Barker-May, five metres short of
the 10th for three, ended up taking
eleven after chipping into the bunker, taking six to
get out, and putting in from the fringe, while his
regular playing partner, Dave Brunswick, matched him
with six out of the bunker on 14. Jim ‘Renaissance
Man’ Atkinson – renamed The Foreman after
screaming fore on the eighth to a group a good sixty
metres ahead of where his drive ended up, had what
can be best described as an up and down round,
following a fine 42 on the front nine with 61 on the
back.
***
Paul
Aramini played very well to amass 22 points and beat
Luke Bleasdale on a spin to take out Scroungers last
Thursday. Peter Rowe was in brilliant form to have
18 gross and 21 points, as did Neil Motion.
Obviously Neil putts better than wife Lesley. Frank
Battista had 20 points, while the anchor boys Colin
Naysmith and David Broadbent both had 19 points as
did Eric Annandale and new member Blair Malatesta.
Annette Atherton was the best of the Associates with
19 points from Shelley Barker-May and youngster
Melissa Pretorius, both of whom finished with 17
points.
