Atkinson tames back nine for countback win

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 29 December 2005

Saturday 24 December 2005 - Club Trophy - 18 Hole Par

SATURDAY'S Par competition, the penultimate round of a busy and successful year for the Collie Golf Club, was contested by 35 players.

It was a three way go at the top between Jim Atkinson, Danny Clayton and Ashley Stewart, all on plus four. Atkinson prevailed on a countback. After learning his golf with a charity social club playing at the Wembley public course in Perth, Atkinson is now at home and comfortable on his new course and his handicap continues to tumble down. Overcoming a poor start, wiping two of the first three, Atkinson fought back to be square at the turn before picking up a net four holes on a back nine characterised by long, straight drives and unerring accuracy with flop shots from anywhere around the green.

Better scores: Atkinson, Clayton, Stewart plus four, Graham Williams, Phil Warburton plus three, Steve Winwood, Clayton Flynn, Mark Williams plus two, Greg Moyle, Bill Hunter plus one.

Novelties: No 4 Steve Wallace, No 7 Phil Warburton, No 9 George Davis, No14 Barry Sheppard, No 18 Joe Italiano.

The CCR was 70.

Thursday 22 December - Scroungers

A rare Scroungers appearance from Joe Italiano was justly recognised and penalised by the head scrounger. Italiano not only cleaned up the day's best nett score, but also returned the best score off the stick and had the longest winning putt on nine.

Better scores: Italiano 21, Colin Sussex, K Russell 20, Scott Chambers, Ross Brody 19, Troy Sheppard, Jim Atkinson, Bill Hunter, Matthew Harker 18. Gross: Italiano 38.

Novelties: No 4 Colin Sussex, No 6 Stephen Farquhar, No 9 Joe Italiano.

Tuesday 20 December - Veterans and Leisure Day

Veterans' results: Hugh Annandale 32, Alan Banks 30, Jeff Crowe 29, Ron Annandale 28, Les Udy, Ernie Sullivan 27.

Novelties: No 4 Des Hebb, No 6 Jeff Crowe, No 9 Ray Alp, No 18 Ernie Sullivan.

Leisure Day results: Greg Martin 41, Steven Ireland 38, Clayton Flynn 37.

News & Fixtures

Mick Cardin, the appointed greenkeeper from 1986 to 1987, who worked so hard to help establish the first grass greens, is expected to visit the golf club early in the new year.

Fixtures:

Saturday, December 31: 18 hole Stroke, club trophies.

Sunday, January 1: Nine hole Stableford sweepstakes.

Monday, January 2: 18 hole Stableford sweepstakes.

Brunswick back with a win

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 22 December 2005

Saturday 17 December 2005 - Keith Martin & Pat Robb Trophy - 18 Hole Stableford

A SPELL is as good as a holiday so the saying goes, and the four weeks Dave Brunswick had away from golf must have done the trick. A refreshed Brunswick took a while to warm up during Saturday’s Stableford, waltzing to the 10th tee after completing nine with only 18 points. Things certainly hotted up from then on with three twos and six three pointers to finish with 42 points and a margin of two shots over Joe Italiano.

Italiano started his round on the back nine, striking tree trouble on the 10th from the drive. Apart from putting lapses on 13 and 15 he did well to turn on 18. Good constructive golf from then on - starting with a birdie on one - resulted in a further 22 points, 38 gross for a 40 point total.

Danny Clayton again impressed with 39. Ray Alp, Roger Lynn, Alan Kent, Les Udy, Mark Suggett all had 38, while Phil Warburton, Ken Tate, Ron Annandale and Garry Dawson all had 37.

A total of 46 men competed for Keith Martin’s trophy and the CCR was set at 70.

Although the ladies’ field was small nothing could detract from the outstanding total of 41 points by Eileen Riley, a personal best gross score of 44-41-85. Chipping and putting were features. 19 points after nine holes was exceeded by the 22 points finish. Betty White is relishing her return to her first golf club and was runner up on 37 points.

Novelties: No 4 Bev Moyses, No 7 Chris Shea, No 9 Phil Warburton, No 14 Frank Battista, No 18 Ed Riley.

Pat Robb continued with her long association with the club by providing the prizes.

Tuesday 13 December - Veterans and Leisure Day

Veterans competed in the 14 hole veteran championship for the J T Bell trophy. Jim Tyler won with 30 points on a countback from Ed Riley.

Apart from his last hole when he battled for a point “Hookey” was in control during his round as he must from his 13 handicap - a credit to an old fella. On 28 were John Wray, Alan Davies and Ross Brody.

The veterans concluded the year with a well attended function followed by a barbecue, well organised by Alf Sanford.

Novelties: No 4 and 9 Jim Tyler, No 6 Peter Gray, No 18 Dick Earl.

Leisure Day results: Clayton Flynn 37, David Laird 35.

Thursday 15 December - Scroungers

Despite a gross of 16 and nett score of 21, Bill Hunter only ran third in Thursday’s nine hole scroungers. Greg Martin and Alan Banks, also with 21, were too good on the spin and finished in that order.

On 20 were Peter Walsh, Phil Eldridge and Scott Chambers, and on 19 were Jim Stanley, Colin Sussex and Ray Cooper.

Ladies’ scores: Gwen Tanian 20, Shelley Barker-May 17.

Novelties: No 4 Tony Barker-May, No 9 Robert Sherwood.

News & Fixtures

Geoff Donnelly, a regular visitor from Narrogin, has always claimed he is used to getting bitten when playing golf in Collie by the locals. Last week he was bitten differently - this time by a large kangaroo tick who hitched a ride back to Narrogin.

Fixtures:

Saturday, December 24: 18 hole par club trophy.

Sunday, December 25: Christmas Day, no competition.

Mid week golf as usual over Christmas period.

Scott Hunter wins Summer Open

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 15 December 2005

Godfrey Pembroke Summer Open Stableford - 10 & 11 December 2005

GOLF from the top shelf was on show during last weekend’s Godfrey Pembroke Summer Open with Scott Hunter again dominating the men’s event and Belinda Wilkinson doing likewise in the ladies.

Both players represented the strong WA Golf Club at Yokine, and have played at the highest level during distinguished careers.

Hunter handled Saturday’s blustery conditions extremely well with 70 - two under par to enjoy a four shot buffer on Donnybrook’s Les Korn.

The big surprise was from Bunbury’s Ian Milne with 77. Hudson Hopewell, Michael Stirk 78, and Mark Doig 79 were also in contention at this stage.

The squally weather constantly buffeted players during Sunday’s rounds with shots not well executed severely punished. Two extra clubs had to be taken on many holes, including the 118 metre par three 14th hole.

Hunter played the back first, hitting off from 10, and had dropped one shot by the turn and was being hotly pressed by Korn who was one under after eight.

Korn played safe up the 18th where he hit a three wood, overshot the corner and copped a bad bounce to drop two.

Despite Hunter having small lapses to finish with two over on the final nine, he maintained a three shot buffer from Korn who finished with an unbelievable birdie three from the bush on nine.

36 hole gross men: Scott Hunter 38-33-71, Len Korn 34-34-68, Mark Doig 63, Michael Stirk 59.

Saturday 18 hole gross: Michael Stirk 31, Hudson Hopewell 31.

Sunday 18 hole gross: Mark Doig 33, Brian Peake 31.

Mark Malatesta had the Collie flag flying when winning the men’s nett title over 36 holes. After a somewhat shaky start to Saturday’s round, Malatesta came home like a train for 36 points. He continued with his good work on Sunday for another 37 for 76 total to win from Pinjarra’s Gavin Simms who added 39 points on Sunday after an average 35 to start.

Gosnells junior Jamie Warman, playing from 10, impressed good judges with his conduct and abilities and finished with 74.

Saturday’s 18 hole nett featured a bolter with Ian Milne having a day out.

Formerly a member of Collie Golf Club, Milne is now a member at Bunbury and from 11 handicap crafted 42 points, while on 38 were Roy Harris and Scott Hunter.

Peter Shaw, from Seaview, is a regular and had a most popular win in Sunday’s nett with the day’s best score of 40 points.

Other top scores: Dennis Annandale 39, Roger Lynn, Phil Warburton, Mark Doig 38.

As expected the ladies gross was a contest between WAGC members Belinda Wilkinson and Alison Eather. Honours were even after Saturday with impressive gross scores of 31 or 77 off the stick. Wilkinson’s experience was to be the deciding factor at the end of the day, matching Saturday’s round of 31 on Sunday, while Eather struggled with the elements to come up three shots short.

36 hole ladies’ gross: Belinda Wilkinson 31-31-62, Alison Eather 31-28-59, Vicki Graham 54, Jo Jones 50.

Saturday 18 hole gross: Vicki Graham 28.

Sunday 18 hole gross: Jill Hibbern from Royal Fremantle 27.

Wanneroo’s Margaret Griffin overcame a six point defeat to overtake Gosnells' Lesley Yeo to win 36 hole nett with her total of 77 points, 36-41. Yeo 43-34-76, Graham 73, Deidre Peck 73.

Ladies 18 hole nett Saturday: Deidre Peck, of Chequers, 40, Nancy Lynn 38, Bev Moyses 38.

Ladies’ 18 hole nett, Sunday: Del McNeil 38, Gwen Tanian 38, Sandra McBride 37.

In the Liquorland Competitions, what could be more fitting than the baby of the field, Gosnell’s junior Jamie Warman, winning the ball in the barrel competition for the $100 prize?

Dave Bickford and Alison Rees, from Gosnells, were each $50 better off after the putting competition.

The 2005 Godfrey Pembroke Summer Open can only be described as highly successful - from all angles - and if comments from the many visitors are anything to go by they will be back in numbers and then some.

Tournament director Bill Hunter was delighted with how things went - the feedback was positive and gratifying to Bill, the ladies and all those who put in so much effort.

Great weather prevailed and Friday’s 4BBB Stableford competition was the perfect pipe opener for those playing in the main event, the Summer Open.

Two visitors to town, Gary Robinson and Kevin Ball, playing from the 10th had a marvellous opening nine total of 27 points and it is little wonder they were able to hold out local lads Matthew Bernardi and Jim Atkinson to win on countback. Both combinations scored 49 points, Atkinson was outstanding and has been given the usual match recognition for his effort.

Dean Crowe and Kalev Kutt were again prominent scoring 48, while on 47 were Ken Tate and John Michalak, Dick Earl and George Davis, Dennis Russell and Dave Coulson. Tom Parry and Marek Golinski had 46, while Scott Hunter and Graham Williams, Ed Riley and Peter Gray, Arthur Benton and Lindsay Carless finished with 45.

Graham Williams attained new heights - lofty in fact - to pick up his first gross win in golf, an open gross to boot. However, such an honour was not entirely unexpected when one has a playing partner the calibre of Scott Hunter. Hunter gave a superb exhibition of golf to finish under par with a gross of 35.

A total of 22 ladies competed for lovely prizes provided by the Bushwalkers with Bev Moyses' 39 points a most impressive total.

Geraldine Foley scored 36, Judy Dowling and Jan Munday 35.

20 per cent jump in Summer Open field

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 8 December 2005

Godfrey Pembroke Summer Open Preview

The Collie Golf Club has again been successful in attracting a capacity field to this weekend’s Godfrey Pembroke Summer Open. The format is wonderfully popular with golfers from many parts of Western Australia, both city and country folk.

Nominations totaling 230 have been received, up over 20 per cent from last year’s field of 190.

This year’s field in size and quality is outstanding with 27 of the men on a single figure handicap, while the lowest handicapped lady plays off a handicap of one.

The course is well groomed for the event with fairways and greens in superb condition. Bunkers have been upgraded and the rough mowed, it is amazing what has been accomplished by the dedicated course supervisor and volunteers. No doubt the course will be set up to provide a good challenge for all players, and forecasted weather will add a bit more spice. Course marshals will ensure the holdups that are often experienced in large fields are kept to a minimum.

160 men and 70 ladies, members of 30 clubs throughout WA - 17 from country clubs and 13 from their city cousins – will play this year. Of the 160 nominations from men 36 are locals, of the 70 nominations from ladies 10 are locals and of the 120 nominations in the four ball which will be held tomorrow 60 are locals.

The Summer Open has been played since 1986, when four prominent members of the Collie Golf Club were responsible for the idea of holding an open golf tournament during the quiet summer months to aid club finances.

John McGee was the club president that year and John Wray the club captain.

These club members provided full sponsorship at this time.

Despite early setbacks the event has continued to gain momentum and can arguably claim to have taken over from the Riverside Open as the most successful annual event held by the Collie Golf Club.

Since the original format was altered to allow the ladies to join in the event continues to attract the biggest mixed fields in club history.

This year’s organising committee has been innovative and their wonderful ideas and hard work are sure to please.

Apart from the golf, added attractions on Saturday include the tasting of quality local wines from Harris River Estate, arts and craft, woodwork, lavender products and oils will all be on display from 4.30pm.

Following the evening meal the band will strike up and for all those still capable the blackbutt boards beckon, no doubt some class acts will be witnessed on the dance floor.

The men’s nominations include many of WA’s top amateur golfers, 27 of which are on single figure handicaps.

Former Collie man Scott Hunter has the lowest handicap of any player, and he will start from scratch. Hunter is a firm favourite to win gross honours, as apart from excellent form his local knowledge must count.

Phil Warman from Gosnells plays off two and must be a strong gross contender together with regular Donnybrook visitor Len Korn on three, Collie’s Hudson Hopewell four, and Mark Doig, Michael Stirk, Brian Peake and Don Anneas on five.

Belinda Wilkinson from a handicap of one stands out in the WAGC ladies gross but can be expected to be kept honest by fellow club member Alison Eather, who will play off a three handicap. Susan Mack, Judy Thompsett and local hope Vicki Graham are strong contenders.

The visitors seldom get a look in in the nett events and this year’s should be no different.

One thing we do know is that the winning nett scores will be of the highest order and to win the highly prized Christmas hampers the players will have to put two good rounds together and then some.

All players have the chance to win valuable prizes by holing out on the par threes - in 2004 there were two holes in one in the Summer Open, both by visitors.

Saturday 3 December
Malatesta Brothers Trophy - 18 hole Stableford

LAST Saturday’s Stableford competition, sponsored by the Malatesta brothers, was popular with club members.

John Wray, who has dominated Scroungers golf in recent weeks, made it his day by winning a closely contested men’s event with a score of plus four. After making a bit of a mess of the first and failing to register a score, Wray recovered with par golf to the turn for plus three, a loss on the tenth followed and again things were quickly corrected and striking competitive qualities resulted in plus one to finish the nine. Most of the booming drives made fairway.

Graham Jackson was well pleased to finish second on plus three after what can only be described as an up and down round with pretty ordinary putting, a standard being a three putt from under a metre on 11. Jackson had nines of plus two and plus one.

Greg Bell, with a score of minus four, won the day’s gross as well as running a drum in the net on plus two.

Other good scores: Ron Annandale, Peter Walsh, Dean Crowe plus two, Joe Italiano, Dean Rakich, Ron Crabbe, Bryan Simpson, Phil Warburton plus one.

Nancy Lynn’s performance in winning the ladies was quite outstanding on a day when strong and flukey winds made shot making a challenge, especially for the girls. Lynn’s impressive plus five, plus two, plus three was put together despite losses on nine and 15.

From a tight 14 handicap Bev Moyses, with plus one, had steady nines of plus one and square to be runner up.

A total of 65 players contested the event and the CCR was set at 71.

Novelties: No 4 Brett Smith, No 7 Jim Hine, No 9 Greg Moyle, No 14 Roger Lynn, No 18 Peter Slater.

Thursday 1 December - Scroungers

Hot scoring by Steve Wallace in Scroungers was a highlight. Massive whacks from the tees were on show, good enough to win the day’s best nett with 24 and the days best gross 38.

Other good scores: Eric Annandale, Jim Moyses 21, Clive Pullan, Ernie Sullivan, Stephen Farquhar, Ian Annandale, Michael Dowling 18.

Novelties: No 4 Alf Sanford, No 9 Tony Barker-May.

Ladies: Gwen Tanian, Lee Hunter 19.

Tuesday 29 November - Veterans & Leisure Day

Veterans results: Ross Brody 32, Bryan Simpson 30, John Mumme 28, Peter Gray 26.

Novelties: No 4 Jeff Crowe, No 6 Ross Brody, No 9 Phil Warburton, No 18 Dick Earl.

Leisure Day results: Trevor McCormick, Bruce Roberts 39, Danny Cheng, David Laird 38.

Vintage effort from veteran Brody

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 1 December 2005

Saturday 26 November
Dot Sullivan, Bev Moyses, May Hollins & Maureen Earl Trophy - 18 hole Stableford

Ross Brody followed up on his midweek winning veterans' form by blitzing last Saturday's quality Collie Golf Club Stableford field by scoring 45 points.

Brody, a protégé of the late R D Walker - a former club captain - started in sparkling form and despite making a mess of things on the eighth was still able to turn with 21 at the halfway mark. Only 42 shots over the back were needed for 24 points, with "Cooper like" performances for four pointers on 17 and 18.

The handicapper took a dim view of an old timer taking the course apart, imposing a hefty handicap reduction of four. The CCR of 72 almost equaled the winner's age.

Kalev Kutt, who scored 41 points for second place, makes it all look easy at times, but sometimes things go wrong - which was exemplified again during Saturday's round. Kutt had 23, with no real blemishes, after nine. The next nine was a "licorice allsorts" - a real mixture, with misses on 10, 12 and 15, and four points on 11 and 16, for a back nine total of 18.

Next, on 38, was Danny Clayton, who had 17 on the front and finished with 21 on the back.

Other good scores: Garry Dawson 37, lan Stewart, Clive Pullan, Dean Crowe, Wayne Waywood, Frank Battista 36, Peter Gray, Joe Dowling, Phil Warburton, Brett Smith, Clayton Flynn 35.

Novelties: No 4 Judy Dowling, No 7 Joe Dowling, No 9 S Kilfoyle, No 14 Jim Moyses, No 18 Brett Smith.

In the ladies' event, June Pike played lovely golf for 37 points, a great start of 21 points on the front nine was backed up with 16 on the back. Bev Moyses had 36 and Kaye Farquhar 35 when filling the minor placings.

Thursday 24 November - Scroungers

John Wray brought up what can only be described as a unique double to win both nett and gross honours in Scroungers for the second consecutive week - a feat that is unlikely to be repeated often. Wray finished one under the card for 22 points.

Murray Tenni, of Narrogin, was second on 21 followed by Jim Atkinson, Jeff Crowe, Dean Crowe, Alan Davies, John Brown, Wayne Waywood, Garry Hammond, Leigh Bernardi, Hugh Annandale, George Davis, Neil Motion and lan Annandale 19.

Ladies: Nyree Bartram had 25 points to head the ladies' section. She was well clear of Lee Hunter on 20, Nancy Lynn and Annette Atherton on 19.

Tuesday 22 November - Veterans & Leisure Day

Ross Brody also won Tuesday's Veterans, but not without a great struggle with the in form Peter Gray. Both players had 35 points for 14 holes.

Other good scores included Brian Simpson 30, Les Udy 29 and John Mumme 25.

Novelties: No 4 Alan Davies, No 6 John Wray, No 9 Jim Hines, No 18 Hugh Annandale.

George Davis, after a small adjustment to his swing, had a good day to win Tuesday's 18 hole Leisure Day competition, scoring 41 points - a pipe opener to the Summer Open. Kevin Simpson was next with 40 points.

News & Fixtures

Nominations for this year's Summer Open have already exceeded last year's nomination of 190. This is quite an achievement in today's challenging and competitive golfing environment, where many tournaments are struggling. To date, entries have been received from 26 individual clubs, with 62 ladies among those nominated.

***

The junior golf clinics ended for the year last Friday and will restart in February following the Christmas break. The clinics have been a resounding success and some very good junior talent has impressed. The efforts of Chris Dunning, Charlie Serravite, Jim Atkinson, Val Riley, Kaye Farquhar and other members to help out is greatly appreciated.

***

Last weekend's rainfall of 31 millimetres was an unexpected bonus prior to the Summer Open. The greens are in excellent order and the course is generally in top condition. Sunday's busy bee was well attended and much was achieved.

***

Fixtures:

Saturday, December 3: Malatesta Brothers 18 hole par.

Sunday, December 4: Nine hole Stableford sweepstakes.

Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: midweek golf.

Four-Ball club record set

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 24 November 2005

Saturday 17 November
Greg Moyle, Dean Crowe, Ash and Chris Stewart trophies - 18 hole 4BBB Stableford

A NEW grass green club record was set for an 18 hole four-ball-better-ball Stableford when Joe Italiano & Ray Cooper scored 53 points to win last Saturday’s closing winter fixture for the Greg Moyle, Dean Crowe, Ash and Chris Stewart trophies.

Italiano and Cooper also held the previous record score - 52 points, achieved just a few months earlier on August 28. To this point no better 4BBB score had been recorded since the change to grass green about 20 year ago.

From time to time there have been many terms used to describe the players, who some times shine in four ball events – cagey, pirates, burglars etc. However, these terms do not apply to the record achievers, who are real gentlemen with a great will to win and a pleasure to play golf with.

Starting on 10 the pairing had accumulated just four points when hitting up the 12th before turning on fireworks to rival the Collie Show. Scintillating golf on the holes to the turn yielded scores of 3, 3, 3, 3, 5, 3 and 4 enabling them to turn with 28 points.

From then on they scored three points on each hole with the exception of Nos 6 and 7 where they had to settle for two pointers. Both players were on the card nine times. It is most unusual to see a winning margin of four in such events.

Peter Gray & Ed Riley played great golf for 49 points to run second.

Gray, the father of touring professional Chris Gray, has adjusted well to Collie and the country life and despite many birthdays, can still give the ball a good ride and the irons do mainly what they are told. Riley backed up well all day, but Gray had three birdies during his round (two for four points) and played the shot of the day at the death knock to protect the final total.

Clive Pullan & Ian Stewart scored 48 and again combined well. They were a tad unlucky to strike the quality opposition on the day.

Better scores: Italiano & Cooper 28-25-53, Gray & Riley 27-22-49, Pullan & Stewart 48, Dean Rakich & Bill Hunter 47, Brett Smith & Kalev Kutt, Jim Atkinson & Tony Barker-May 46, Greg Bell & Dennis Cocker, Trevor McCormick & John Brown 45.

The sponsors of this year’s Heineken Classic should consider poaching Greg Moyle and his co-sponsors following last Saturday’s effort, which was much appreciated by the excellent field of 78 players who participated.

Sunday 20 November - Bev & Jim Moyses 18 Hole Mixed Individual Stableford

In Sunday’s closing day Bev & Jim Moyses mixed individual Stableford competition there were two outstanding scoring feats.

One was from Phil Warburton, who totalled 42 points to win the gents, and the other was from Annette Atherton, with 39 points to win the ladies.

Warby’s new big red driver is worth the purchase price, while Atherton has enjoyed a stellar season.

Better scores: Men, Phil Warburton 42, Barry Sheppard 37, Murray Tenni 36; Ladies, Annette Atherton 39, Kaye Farquhar 36, Helen Annandale 35.

Novelties: No 4, Vicki Graham; No 14, Eileen Riley and Norm Oates.

Friday 18 November - Twilight

Scott Hunter, Roger Lynn and Shelley Barker-May all scored 18 points in the nine hole Twilight scroungers event contested last Friday.

Members are urged to participate in the Friday twilight events which have been scheduled over the summer months.

Thursday 17 November - Scroungers

John Wray had to par the front nine to beat Dick Earl in Scroungers last week, scoring 18 gross for 23 points.

Earl had 22 points and at one stage had five consecutive three points before throwing in a couple of ones.

Other good scores: Dave Henderson 21, Reg Bluett, Eddie Mills, Ron Annandale, Jim Moyses, Ross Brody, Alan Davies, Roger Lynn, Jim Tyler, Wayne Waywood 20.

Novelties: No 4, Roger Lynn; No 9, Ray Alp.

Ladies: Annette Atherton 22, Kaye Farquhar 21.

Tuesday 15 November - Veterans & Leisure Day

John Mumme had a day out in Vets to finish on 31 to win from Dave Henderson, Dick Earl 30, Alan Kent and Alan Davies 29.

Novelties: No 6 and 9, Alan Davies; No 14, Alf Sanford; No 18, Bryan Simpson.

A total of 12 competed in Leisure Day and some good scores were returned.

Clayton Flynn again impressed with 42 points to win from Dennis Cocker 39, Danny Clayton 37 and Matthew Harker 36.

News & Fixtures

Australian golf has left itself exposed to the risk of a damaging drug scandal according to the head of the Australian PGA Tour.

Amateur golf in Australia is subject to testing.

There's anecdotal evidence that drugs have been taken to control nerves when putting and it is alleged several major championship winners of the past decade have used an outside agent. God help many of us old vets who rely on the chemist to get to golf if they get dinkum.

Hopewell's first Collie title

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 17 November 2005

Winter Season Results Announced - Hopewell Wins Championship

HUDSON Hopewell topped off a great year with a gross three round total of 228 to win his first Collie Golf Club Men’s Championship. Hopewell has dominated gross events over the past 12 months, taking out the prestigious Riverside Open in March, and was a firm favourite to win the title.

The championship, contested over five 18 hole rounds, with the best three rounds to count, concluded with Hopewell five shots ahead of Danny Cheng, who had a three round total of 233. Trevor Lawrence and Ron Crabbe were a further four shots away from second placed Cheng, on 237.

Danny Clayton scored 261 to win the B Grade gross from Chris Dunning on 266.

The veterans contested a nett event with Ron Annandale on 223 shading Stephen Farquhar on 224. Other good nett scores were returned by Charlie Serravite 210, Trevor Lawrence 212 and Bill Hunter 216.

The Trevor Lawrence five-points system that rewarded consistent golf for the winter fixtures was won by Bill Hunter with 20 points from John Brown and Ron Annandale on 19. These golfers turn up most Saturdays, rain hail or shine. Others to do well included Danny Clayton 17, David Brunswick 15, Ed Riley, Graham Miffling 14, Jim Atkinson, Tony Barker-May, Ron Crabbe, Chris Shea and Troy Sheppard 13.

The A Grade gross eclectic was a one horse race with Hudson Hopewell finishing 16 under the card with 56 gross to win with a five shot margin over Ron Crabbe and Clayton Flynn who had 61. Trevor McCormick, Leigh Bernardi and John Brown finished on 62.

In the B Grade, Frank Battista, with 65, enjoyed a one shot winning margin over the youthful Chris Shea with 66. Other good scores were returned by Chris Dunning 67, Peter Slater 68, Clive Pullan and Dave Czerniawsky 69.

The A Grade nett was won by Clayton Flynn on 55, from Trevor McCormick 56, Stephen Farquhar, John Brown, Ron Crabbe 57.5, Leigh Bernardi and Matthew Bernardi 59.

Chris Shea won the B Grade nett with 57.5, from Dave Czerniawsky 58, Ray Cooper, Peter Slater 58.5, Chris Dunning 59, Roger Lynn 60.5, Jim Moyses and Clive Pullan 61.

All statistics were compiled and recorded during the season by Jim Moyses, to whom the club is deeply indebted, and who was a well deserved recipient of Life Membership this year.

Saturday 12 November
Carpenter, Banks, Pokrywka and Clark trophies - 18 Hole Stableford

The annual Carpenter, Banks, Pokrywka and Clark trophies was held last Saturday and was a keenly contested event with 58 players competing.

Low marker Greg Bell thoroughly deserved his win after nines of 37-38 for a 75 total and 41 points. Starting on No. 1, Bell dropped shots on two and five before a birdie on nine, before glitches on 11 and 18 resulted in dropped shots.

Jim Moyses only managed a point on four but still turned with 23 points for nine holes (41 gross). A bit of a struggle around the back resulted in 17 points for a final total of 40 and second place. Fred Bronickis wiped No 1 before scoring 19 on the front nine and 20 on the back for 39 points.

Other good scores: Trevor McCormick 38, Dick Earl, Ron Crabbe, John Brown, Tony Barker-May 37.

Novelties: No 4 Peter Slater, No 7 Dean Rakich, No 14 Ross Brody, No 18 Ray Alp.

Sunday 13 November

A Mixed Yankee foursome event was played on Sunday for Dorsett Day.

The nominations from visiting golfers was disappointing, a far cry from years gone by, but a total of 20 couples contested in the delightful playing conditions and scores were good.

Popular and worthy winners of the event were Betty & Barry Sheppard who netted 64 3/8. Playing from 20 5/8 handicap the Sheppards had a start of the highest order, 41 good hits for nine to set things up. A bit of a struggle on the 10th developed before settling again to coast to 44 in the run home.

Nancy & Roger Lynn were able to match the winners on each side 41-45 for 38 7/8 for second place. The Lynns went into Dorsett Day with excellent form in their respective club competitions.

Despite a couple of costly sevens to begin with, Annette Atherton & Phil Warburton came home well in 39, netting 69 1/4 to run a drum.

Other good scores: Bill & Lee Hunter 71, Hugh & Helen Annandale 71 1/8, Stephen & Kaye Farquhar 71 1/4, Danny Cheng & Vicki Graham 71 3/8, Ross Brody & Betty White 71 1/2, Dean Rakich & Angela Ireland 71 5/8, Kevin & Robyn Simpson 71 3/4.

Gross: Danny Cheng & Vicki Graham 77.

Tuesday 8 November - South West Veterans

Collie Golf Club’s turn to host the South West Veterans event was successful with 130 players competing in last week’s event.

The norm for their games of golf is for local players to dominate things, and so it was. Frank Battista and Ray Alp did themselves proud with 41 point totals. Peter Castelli, a former Collie stalwart who plays in Harvey since retiring to the coast, was in second on 40, while locals Jim Tyler and Brian Banks finished on 39.

A CCR of 72 was set for the event.

A local vets competition was also played, with Alan Banks' fine 29 winning from Ross Brody 27, John Mumme, Dave Henderson, Bryan Simpson 25.

Novelties: No 4 Peter Gray, No 6 Jim Tyler, No 18 Ed Riley.

Novelties: No 4 Alan Banks, No 6 John Wray, No 9 Dave Henderson, No 18 Jim Hine.

The highlight of last week’s Tuesday Leisure Day was a superb round of golf from club champion Hudson Hopewell, who produced a par round of 72 for 40 points. He lamented after he completed his round that “it could have been anything today” and he was right as he failed to make the most of numerous birdie chances.

Trizzy triumphs in Men's Championship final round

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 3 November 2005

Saturday 29 October - Final Round, Men's Championship - 18 Hole Stroke

Trevor 'Trizzy' Lawrence saved his best for last when the final round of the Collie Golf Club's 2005 championship was contested on Saturday. Lawrence shared A grade gross honours and won the nett in the 18 hole event.

A three time club champion, Lawrence was not in contention for the overall honours after having been well below his best in the earlier championship rounds. In last Saturday's round, many players found the blustery, windy conditions hard to handle but not Lawrence, who had 38-35-73 for 64 nett. Accurate irons into the greens enabled Lawrence to have birdies on 3, 10, 13 and 14, while his only blemishes were bogeys on 5, 8, 9, 12 and 18. The big bloke has been struggling with his game of late and the handicapper, mindful of advancing years, was kind hearted in only imposing a one stroke handicap reduction.

Leigh Bernardi, who also had 73 gross, was second with 35-38-73. The long hitter easily birdied the par five 1st and 10th and up until the 12th looked likely to finish with a sub par round, but 12, 13 and 15 put paid to the chance.

The B grade's best gross score on the day was returned by Charlie Serravite, who had 89 off the stick, while the nett in this division was won by Danny Clayton who, despite going four over on five, had 67 nett.

Other good nett scores on the day were returned by: Charlie Serravite, John Brown 70, Graeme Jackson, Danny Cheng, Alan Kent 71, Wayne Waywood, Dean Rakich 72. A total of 43 players contested the event, which had the CCR set at 70.

Novelties: No 4 Danny Clayton; No 7, Chris Dunning; No 9, Des Hebb; No 14, Trevor Lawrence; No 18, Graeme Miffling.

Sunday 30 October - Premier Coal & Griffin Coal Challenge

Sunday's Premier and Griffin Coal Challenge went off well, with everyone well fed and well behaved and retired master baker Ray Alp in charge of the cooks.

Griffin started underdogs and you could write your own ticket about their chances of gaining an upset win over Premier's finest workers, but an upset was on the cards at half time and at the end of the day Griffin won 67-29 to 69-3. No doubt the day's highlight was the nett win of John Brown & Dick Earl with the great nett score of 62, squaring the card in the process. Brown's big game was well supported by Earl's short game and coaching.

Top scores: Brown & Earl 62, S Hoy & R Dalton 65.5, Neil Motion & Jason Mumme 66.5, lan Jones & Neil McDonald 67.

Thursday 26 October - Scroungers

A return to full handicaps resulted in heavy scoring to start summer Scroungers with George Dorozenko returning the great total of 25 points to win from another master of the chalk, Graham Williams, on 23. Next up were Rodney Simmonds, Bruce Roberts 20, Peter Slater, Ron Annandale, Ray McGill, John Mumme, Troy Sheppard 19.

Novelties: No 4, Alan Banks; No 9, Steven Ireland.

Ladies: Nancy Lynn 16.

Tuesday 25 October - Veterans & Leisure Day

Bryan Simpson had a great day out to win last week's Veterans, displaying a full range of shots backed up by his usual deadly putting to score 34 points. Other place getters were Ray Alp 26, Alan Banks 25, Ernie Sullivan 23.

Novelties: No 4, Jeff Crowe; No 6, Jim Hine; No 9, Dick Earl; No 18, Ernie Sullivan.

Back from minding the grandchildren in Sydney and playing his first golf in weeks, Frank Battista had a handy 37 points to win Leisure Day from Clayton Flynn on 36.

News & Fixtures

Most of us have the occasional windy - when the club head fails to make contact with the ball. One feels a dill and usually cops a fair bucketing from those in the group. The game's "hacker" has more than his fair share. However, the feat was achieved by a four handicapper on No 11 last Saturday. It just goes to prove what a great leveler golf is.

***

The winter season eclectic and five point system finishes on Saturday.

***

Last Friday's junior golf was again well attended and is on again tomorrow afternoon. Due to the large number of juniors turning up to play, there is a need for more senior players to assist with the coaching of golf basics. Anyone who can help would be made most welcome by Charlie Serravite and Chris Dunning, who have taken on a big task in conducting the clinics.

***

Twilight golf starts this Friday and will be played over nine holes on the same basis as Scroungers.

Saturday, November 5: 18 hole Stableford for Ricoh Business Centre trophy
Sunday, November 6: 18 hole Stableford sweepstakes
Tuesday South West Veterans over 18 holes
Scroungers on Thursday

Cheng & Graham again in Mixed Foursomes

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 27 October 2005

Sunday 23 October - Mixed Foursomes Championship

THE Collie Golf Club's 2005 Mixed Foursomes Championship was an enthralling contest when played last Sunday over 28 holes.

Defending champs Danny Cheng & Vicki Graham finally prevailed in a play-off after a nip and tuck battle with their playing partners, Ron Crabbe & Bev Moyses.

Crabbe & Moyses started well, putting early pressure on their playing partners to open up a handy five shot lead at the half way mark, 61 to 66. However, the titleholders came back strongly after lunch, pegging the lead back to take the afternoon round 63 to 68 to tie the scores after 28 holes. Cheng & Graham won the first of the play-off holes to take their third mixed foursomes title.

Best gross scores - Cheng & Graham 66-63-129, Crabbe & Moyses 61 -68-129, Phil Warburton & Margaret Pike 65-69-134.

The Annandales made the nett event their own. Ron swapped his better half, Lorraine, for brother Hugh's wife, Helen, to win the event by six strokes. Ron & Helen Annandale had 51.5-47.5-99 to win from Hugh & Lorraine Annandale on 52.5-52.5-105. One stroke further away on 106 were Phil Warburton & Margaret Pike.

Saturday 22 October - Sandvick Materials  4BBB Stableford

The combinations of Brett Smith-Kalev Kutt and Roger Lynn-Chris Shea were head and shoulders above the rest of the field in last Saturday's fourball competition, each scoring 49 points. The latter combination was most unfortunate to run second on a lengthy countback. This total is hard to come by and seldom beaten.

Both combinations had 25 points to start and 24 points to finish. Smith & Kutt had four pointers on 5 and 17. Smith was on the card four times after nine holes, and from there on the big fella was a class act, doing all the scoring on the last nine holes.

Shea dominated scoring for the runners-up. He was on the card 11 times, with four pointers on 1 and 5. Smith and Shea's performances attracted the attention of the match committee who acted accordingly with handicap adjustments.

Best scores: Smith & Kutt, Lynn & Shea 49, Andy Laurie & Jeff Crowe, Ron Crabbe & Chris Dunning 46, Eric & lan Annandale, Rodney Simmonds & Peter Ellery, Jim Moyses & Stephen Farquhar 45, Joe Italiano & Ray Cooper 44.

Novelties: No 4 lan Annandale, No 7 and 18 Ken Woods, No 14 Bruce Roberts.

Thursday 20 October - Scroungers

The Annandales did it again last Thursday when Eric Annandale donated the mens’ and ladies' trophies, which were won by husband and wife, Hugh and Helen Annandale respectively. Unfortunately the collector's port, which was first prize in the men's event, went to a golfer who is not a collector. Hugh just loves the stuff and it will not remain a collection item for long. Annandale won on a countback from Jim Moyses and Stephen Farquhar, all scoring 22 points.

Other good nett scores: Roger Lynn, Rodney Simmonds 20, Ed Riley, Phil Eldridge 19.

Novelties: No 4 Rodney Simmonds, No 6 Phil Warburton, No 7 Bill Hunter, No 9 Colin Giblett.

Ladies best scorers were Helen Annandale on 19 and June Pike on 18. Novelties: No 12 Gwen Tanian, No 18 Bev Moyses.

Tuesday 18 October - Veterans & Leisure Day

Veterans - say no more- was another win for the Annandales. Hugh Annandale scored 28 points to win the 14-hole event from Ross Brody on 26, Les Udy, David Brunswick 25, Ernie Sullivan and Des Hebb 24.

Novelties: No 4 Ross Brody, No 6 Les Udy, No 9 Jeff Crowe, No 18 Harry Hadfield.

Low markers Hudson Hopewell and Danny Cheng scored 38 points in last week's Leisure Day event, played on Tuesday. Kevin Ireland had 37 and Matt Harker 35.

News & Fixtures

This Saturday's final round of the Men's Club Championship would appear to be a foregone conclusion. Hudson Hopewell, on 229 strokes, has an eight shot lead over Ron Crabbe with Danny Cheng a further four shots adrift. But of course, anything can happen in golf. The nett event is close with Bill Hunter one shot in front of Ron Crabbe, Hudson Hopewell and Chris Dunning who are all on 217 strokes.

***

There will be plenty at stake this Sunday when Wesfarmers Coal and Griffin Coal front up for their annual golf challenge.

***

Junior golf gets underway at 4pm tomorrow (Friday) afternoon. All juniors are welcome to attend. Sponsorship has been arranged through Healthways and a good season is anticipated for the young golfers.

***

Fixtures:

Friday, October 28: Junior golf at 4pm.

Saturday, October 29: 18 hole Stroke round, fifth round of Men's Club Championship for the Greg & Clayton Bell trophies.

Sunday, October 30: Wesfarmers versus Griffin Coal.

Mid week golf will be played on Tuesday (Leisure Day and Veterans), and Scroungers will be contested on Thursday.

Bernardi Boys big win in Foursomes Championship

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 20 October 2005

Saturday 15 October - Mens Foursomes Championship

LEIGH and Matthew Bernardi recorded their second Collie Golf Club Foursomes Championship win last Saturday.

They had 78 off the stick in the 18-hole stroke event to record an easy win. The brothers first won the title in 2003 and have also been placed second on two other occasions. Last Saturday's win adds to a number of major successes since the brothers left junior ranks.

Starting on No. 10, they had an easy par which was followed by dropped shots on 11 and 12, pars on 13 and 14, one over on 15 before damaging four-putts on 16 and 17 from long birdie chances before pairing No.18 to turn in a disappointing 43.

It was a different story from there on as they powered home in 35, one under the card, on the front nine, which included an eagle on No. 1 – Matt coming in with a six iron after Leigh’s booming drive. Jeff Crowe was heard in the clubhouse later claiming that he also approached No. 1 green with a six iron – but ended up 300m short.

Runners up Greg Bell & Ron Crabbe had a poor start with a two over on the relatively easy par five first hole. They struggled from there on to turn in 42. Three dropped shots on the last two holes (17 and 18) did not help matters, although 84 was enough to take second place from Clayton Flynn & Ken Woods on a countback. The Woods and Flynn pairing led with 40 after the first nine.

Leading gross scores: Leigh & Matthew Bernardi 43-35-78, Greg Bell & Ron Crabbe 43-41-84, Clayton Flynn & Ken Woods 40-44-84. B grade gross: Gary Dawson & Charlie Serravite 91, Jim Moyses & Stephen Farquhar 91.

The 18 hole nett (overall) resulted in a well deserved win to David Brunswick - who drives the fastest golf cart in the west - and regular golfing partner Tony Barker-May, who displayed a well balanced tactful game for 69.5 nett. Brunswick played superbly to overcome his partner’s shortcomings, and sealed the win with a 10m putt from 2m behind the 18th after Barker-May tossed up between an 8 iron or 9 iron approach, and as usual picked the wrong club.

Ken Tate & John Michalak had 70 nett to follow on from good Country Week form for second spot, while Danny Clayton & Peter Gray finished with 72.5 nett after peppering the greens all day but failing to take advantage of classic shot making.

B grade nett results: Roger Lynn & Joe Dowling 72.5, Barry Sheppard & Ed Riley 73.

Novelties: No 4, Matthew Bernardi; No 7, John Brown; No 14, Wayne Waywood; No 18, Garry Dawson; Pizza Wizard, Greg Bell.

A total of 25 pairs contested the championship – up from 10 pairs last year - vindicating the innovative decision made by the match committee to play the event on a Saturday for the first time.

Thursday 13 October - Scroungers

As expected the grand finale of winter Scroungers attracted good numbers and with a return to full handicaps you had to be good to feature in the placings.

Stephen Farquhar and Graham Williams topped scoring with 22 points and the club captain was successful in the spin. Other good scores came from Chris Bliss, John Wray, Jim Moyses 21, Mark , lan Annandale 20, Neil Motion, Ed Riley and Mark Malatesta 19.

The best gross was John Wray's 37 off the stick.

In the ladies, Bev Moyses scored 20 points and Kaye Farquhar 19.

Novelties: No 4, Stephen Farquhar; No 6, Rob Ferris; No 8, Chris Bliss; No 9, David Broadbent; No12, Bev Moyses; No 18, June Pike.

Summer scroungers starts today with great prizes up for grabs. Visitors are welcome.

Athertons' triumph

LOCAL ladies had a successful Open Day last Friday. A total of 102 players contested an 18 hole Canadian Foursomes event which was sponsored by Worsley Alumina.

President Lorraine Annandale was delighted with the smooth running of the event and thanked the many helpers for their support.

As usual with open days, home ground knowledge helped many locals feature in the trophies. The nett winners were the formidable couple of Betsy & Annette Atherton with a great score of 41 Stableford points. June Pike & Maureen Earl finished second with 39 on a countback from Bev Moyses & Norma Bell.

The gross winners were Capel pair Noelene Scott & Di Templeman with 22 gross points. Cara Swan & Lesley Motion from Collie had 21 gross points. Rena Bright & Lyn Egerton-Green from Harvey were third with 19 gross points.

There were novelty prizes for every hole, with one lucky lady winning the 'pot of gold' (which was $60) for the best shot on number four.

***

On Wednesday October 12 a total of 37 ladies played an 18 hole Stroke event for trophies donated by Jackson Electrical, who donated a generous $100 Coles Myer voucher to the winner and runner up in both grades.

The easy winner of me A grade was Val Riley with a great score of 90-19-71. Country member Jan Munday finished second with 93-18-75. The consistent Eileen Riley came third with 93-17-76 from Lesley Motion who scored 101-25-76. Low markers Swan who scored 77, Moyses who scored 78 and Nancy Lynn who scored 78 also rate a mention.

Overall better scores were returned in the B grade, with Shelley Barker-May having the best nett score of 103-33-70 for the event. She was rewarded with a handicap reduction of one. Annette Atherton was second after a countback from Blanche Faries, both with 100-29-71. Atherton reduced her handicap to 28. Moyses wins Collie Mail event on 38th try

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 13 October 2005

Saturday 8 October - Collie Mail Trophy

COLLIE Golf Club members last Saturday competed in an 18 hole Par event for the 51st consecutive Collie Mail Trophy. There were 58 players in the field and they welcomed the opportunity to play the game without having to rely on umbrellas.

The CCR of 70 was indicative of easier playing conditions and leading the scoring was Jim Moyses, with plus five, to bring up his first win in the event after 38 years of trying to do so. Moyses started on No 10 and after playing five holes was plus three and was able to defend this total to the turn. Wins on No's one, four, five and six enabled Moyses to build on his good back nine and compensated for glitches on seven and eight.

Representing the Collie Mail and himself, Joe Italiano was second with plus four. Italiano could easily claim the mantle of the club's most consistent player. He had plus two on the front and plus two on the back, highlighted by birdies on six and 14 which counted for the eclectic competition.

Ray Cooper, also on plus four, was enigmatic to say the least - it was either "Sydney or the bush". Cooper had a staggering nine wins - five on the front, four on the back - to go with his four wipes.

Other good scores: Mark Malatesta, John Brown plus three, Hugh Annandale, Rodney Simmonds, Dave Brunswick plus two, Graham Williams, Roger Lynn, Danny Clayton, Garry Dawson plus one.

Novelties: Nearest the pins, Garry Dawson, Charlie Serravite; No 6, Joe Italiano; No 7, Rodney Simmonds; No 8, Chris Dunning; No 9, John Mumme; No 11 Dave ; No 13, Garry Dawson; No 14, John Brown; No 18, Rodney Simmonds; Pizza Wizard, Stephen Farquhar.

Thursday 6 October - Scroungers

In Scroungers Roger Lynn achieved a first by winning overall and running a "drum" as well. This was brought about by paying nomination for both nines thus both cards were accepted. Most Scroungers will welcome a return to full handicaps, starting today, extra trophies and novelties apply.

Last Thursday's best scores: Roger Lynn 19, Alan Kent 18, Chris Bliss, Ed Riley, Tony Barker-May, Hugh Annandale 17.

Novelties: No 4 Eric Annandale, No 9 George Davis.

Ladies: Bev Moyses 18, Eileen Riley 17.

Tuesday 4 October - Veterans & Leisure Day

In Veterans' on Tuesday of last week, Peter Gray scored 27 points over the 14 holes to win from Ross Brody 26, Ray Alp and Alan Davies 24.

Novelties: No 4 Alan Davies; No 6 Jeff Crowe.

In the 18-hole Leisure Day on Tuesday of last week, Trevor McCormick scored 37 points to win from Frank Battista 35 and Clayton Flynn 32.

News & Fixtures

At Kwinana, Dave and Dean Crowe won with 45 points. John Wray and Mark Malatesta had 43, lan Annandale and Bill Hunter 43, Dean Rakich and Troy Sheppard 42, and lan Jones and Bruce Roberts 41.

Event four was held at Meadow Springs and Collie's Dean Crowe scored 35 points to be placed. Both brothers play from scratch. Greg has an average gross round of 68.5 competing in Kalgoorlie.

One shot cut for victor Annandale

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 6 October 2005

Saturday 1 October - Dale & Christine Miffling Piva's Deli Trophy

EVERY so often in golf players confuse a Stableford event for a par, and vice versa. This was the case last Saturday when two, in a party of four, picked up their balls when still having shots left. After some conjecture, things were sorted out and Eric Annandale went on to win the Stableford competition for Dale & Christine Miffling's Piva's Deli Trophy. Despite more difficult playing conditions Annandale scored 39 points, starting with 21 and closing with 18 despite wiping No. 12. The handicapper was very kind with a one shot reduction and did not get the measure by a long shot.

Tony Barker-May continued knocking on the door, two adrift of the winning total. A steady opening nine for 19 points was followed by three points on the tenth before things came to a halt with only one point over the next three. Barker-May regained composure and finished with great determination to add 14 points over his last five holes, including 10 points on his last three.

Kalev Kutt hit up the 18th with a fine score (20 on the front nine and 17 after eight on the back) but was unable to add to his total. Bruce Roberts, Ron Crabbe and Dave Brunswick scored 36, Ross Brody, Clive Pullan and Steve Wallace 35, and Ed Riley 34. The CCR for the day was 72.

Novelties: No 4, Trevor McCormick; No 7, John Brown; No 14, Ron Annandale; No 18, Clive Pullan; No 12, Pizza Wizard Garry Dawson.

Thursday 29 September - Scroungers

Ashley Hollins occasionally plays golf of the highest order and when he does so the game is uncomplicated, decisive and skilful as playing partners watch in awe. In the Scroungers event, last Thursday, Hollins had a day out, failing to wipe a hole in a round spiced with birdies and pars for a big total of 24 points. The challenge now is to carry this form over the next couple of weeks when Scroungers contest trophy events. Dean Crowe, after a long lay off, played good golf and scored 21 points for 13 gross, which was also the day's best and shared with David Laird.

In the nett section Peter Ellery and Ed Riley had 17 points, Graham Williams, Alan Davies, John Michalak and Jeff Crowe had 16.

Dick Earl (No. 4) and Jim Tyler (9) won the novelties on offer.

Tuesday 27 September - Veterans & Leisure Day

Tuesday's winter storm did not prevent eight hardy veterans from defying the elements.

Des Hebb, who used to work in such conditions when farming, made the high winds look like gentle zephyrs, and the soggy fairways look like main roads as he compiled 29 points.

"Mr Thereabouts", Phil Warburton, scored 24, Alan Davies 23, Jim Tyler 22 and Bryan Simpson 20.

Novelties: No 4, Des Hebb; No 6, Jim Tyler.

There was no Leisure Day.

Hebb's great result rewarded her with a three stroke reduction off her handicap, and she is now on 26, one stroke from A grade.

Judy Dowling and Jean Hadfield had 34 points each while Gwen Tanian and Maureen Earl had 33 and Mary Baldisseri 31.

Val Riley won the A grade with 33 points, Kath Alcorn, Eileen Riley and Betty White had 32, while Bev Moyses had 31.

Early starter top on grand final day

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 29 September 2005

Saturday 24 September - Club Trophy

EIGHT players in the afternoon and 28 in the morning contested the 18-hole par event at the Collie Golf Club last Saturday, AFL grand final day.

Among those who hit off in time to watch the grand final was John Brown who scored plus four to win on a countback from Peter Slater.

Despite being slightly disadvantaged by dew and moisture on the newly sanded greens, the morning players had far superior scores to those who hit off in the afternoon.

Brown had 79 off the stick and despite failing to score on the fourth he turned plus two and matched that total over the concluding nine.

Slater started on the 10th and despite two wipes on Nos 10 and 14 managed plus one on the back before rallying over the front for plus three.

Although missing out on top spot Slater knocked in a valuable long putt on No. 12 for the Pizza Wizard pack.

Other good scores: Trevor McCormick plus one, Frank Battista, Colin Giblett, Ray Alp square, Alan Davies, Alan Banks, Ed Riley, Wayne Waywood minus one.

Novelties: No 4, Chris Shea; No 7, Colin Sussex; No 14, Colin Giblett, No 18, Dick Earl.

Thursday 22 September - Scroungers

Novelties: Phil Warburton and Frank Battista.

Alan Banks made a welcome return to form, scoring 19 points. Other good scores: Bryan Simpson 18, Alan Kent 17, Ed Riley 16, John Wray, Ray Alp, Harry Winfield, Peter Gray 14.

Novelties: No 11, Peter Gray; No 14, John Wray; No 18,Jeff Crowe.

Leisure Day golfers elected not to enter the competition on the day.

Monday 26 September

Magnificent Monday holiday weather did not bring out the club's players in any great numbers with a field of just nine, including visitors. Roger Lynn and Ed Riley scored 35 and Danny Clayton and Phil Warburton 32, which were the best scores of the event.

News & Fixtures

Following Country Week, Scroungers go back to full handicap.

Margaret Pike claims Boulevard Cafe trophy

BOULEVARD Cafe owners and long time supporters of ladies golf Kaye and Phil Kaye donated the trophies for both golf grades in the Associates' competition on Wednesday 21 September. The winner of the A grade was Margaret Pike with a good score of 88- 16-72 from another low marker, Bev Moyses, who was close behind with a score of 87-14-73. Pike's good score reduced her handicap to 15 after the CCR for the competition was set at 74. Ena Davies and Betty White had 75 nett each and on 78 were Jill Burgess and Val and Eileen Riley.

Linda Hebb was delighted with a fantastic return to form with a score of 102-29-73 to have a victory in the B grade competition. Veteran Dorothy Henderson did well in the B grade with a score of 110-36-74. Jean Hadfield and Debbie Martin had a score of 75 and Judy Dowling, Annette Atherton, June Ransome and Maureen Earl were behind them with a score of 76.

Old miners victorious in Four-Ball

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 22 September 2005

Saturday 17 September - Club Trophies - 18 hole 4BBB Stableford

GOLF last Saturday played second fiddle to the West Australian and Collie Eagles football teams with far less players than usual turning up.

A total of 40 pairs competed for the Collie Club trophies and a football connection continued with former Mines Rovers team mates Ron Annandale & Jim Moyses scoring a narrow win on 44 points. It was a total of contrasts - Annandale marked and passed well from the first quarter and by half time had scored 17 of the 22 points registered, while his partner failed to find the target on many occasions.

Annandale dominated up until three-quarter time, before a rocket from the coach had an immediate effect on his mate, who regained rhythm and composure, starting with three points on 14 and closing with four points on 18. He scored a goal from an acute angle for 15 points in the last five holes.

Trevor Lawrence & Peter Walsh were runners up on a countback from Ross Davidson & Peter Slater. Lawrence and Walsh not only make a good team working on the course, they get the job done in competition. Walsh had the pleasure of riding in the ‘Popemobile’, and although not playing his best golf, he struck two vital blows with four point totals on 7 and 18, while Lawrence was well under his nine handicap.

Davidson and Slater had 18 points after seven holes, Slater making birdie into the headwind on 4, but late ‘shots on goal’ were not rewarded. Slater again cramped badly at half time and it was left to Davidson to step up and steady the ship.

Also with 45 were Alan Kent & Clayton Flynn, who had their chances - and not allowing for the wind on 2 and 15 proved expensive.

Other good scores: Dean Rakich & Bill Hunter 44, Clive Pullan & lan Stewart 43.

Novelties: No. 4 Peter Slater, No. 7 Peter Walsh, No. 14 Phil Warburton, No. 18 Colin Giblett, Pizza Wizard, Dean Rakich.

Thursday 15 September 2005 - Scroungers

Matthew Harker continues to combine football and golf to good effect. A gifted sportsman, Harker has little time for practice but that does not reflect on the end result. He scored 19 points from a seven handicap in last Thursday's Scroungers event.

As the Scroungers winter season draws to a close, many players are finding it hard to play to reduced handicaps.

Other good scores: Troy Sheppard 18, Alan Banks, Don Fraser, David Laird, Clive Pullan, Tony Barker-May 16; Nancy Lynn 13, June Pike 12.

Novelties: No. 4 Rodney Simmonds, No. 9 Peter Walsh.

Tuesday 13 September 2005 - Veterans & Leisure Day

Alf Sanford, the master of Busselton Jetty, had the day's best catch in Veterans on Tuesday with a bag of 26 points.

Others to do well were Jeff Bebbington, Peter Gray, Brian Simpson 24, Jim Tyler 23, Ross Brody and Les Udy 22. Novelties: No. 4 and 6 Hugh Annandale, No. 9 Alan Davies, No. 18 Ed Riley.

Greg Bell won the Leisure Day competition with 36 by the length of the old race course straight. Reg Bluett ran second with 32.

Robinson wins tough event

by The Dancer, published in the Collie Mail Thursday, 15 September 2005

Saturday 10 September

THE advent of spring appears to have had an unusual effect on score card accuracy, scoring errors being unusually high and attracting the ultimate penalty in Collie Golf Club events.

The match committee has been kept watchful and busy in recent weeks. It happened again last Saturday with the day's best score of +5 disqualified, and apart from costing the unfortunate player the trophy, a handicap reduction was a double blow.

However, one should not detract from the winning +3 score returned by Jay Robinson who has made constant improvement to his game during the past 12 months. When you are able to see the 10th green from your drive it helps no end but the tricky bit is still to follow.

Robinson was +1 after nine and won on a countback from Danny Clayton. Clayton, who was the most consistent golfer in South West pennants, was a little off his steady best wiping one and eight but still turned +2 before an up and down finish for +1.

Third was the self-proclaimed "hacker", Tony Barker-May, who, with +2, was far from that. He started well being two up after three holes, three up after seven before halving eight and nine. It was mainly a win or a wipe from then on. His day will come when everything falls into place.

With Country Week just around the corner the CCR of 72 was of much interest to some.

Other good scores:

Brian Banks, Trevor McCormick +1, Ray Cooper, Greg Martin square, Des Hebb, Greg Bell, Dean Rakich, David Laird, David Brunswick -1.

Novelties: No 4, Chris Shea; No 7, Ian Jones; No 14, Garry Dawson; No 18, Jim Tyler.

The Pizza Wizard winner, Roger Lynn, had the children and grandchildren around for tea and the prize was appropriate and popular.

Thursday 8 September 2005 - Scroungers

Dreadful playing conditions were not enough to deter 24 hardy scroungers from competing, although about half spent most of the afternoon in the bar and who could blame them.

Apart from the exceptional score of 18 points, from Jim Moyses, other scores were what they should have been on such a day. Moyses had a winning margin of five from Bryan Simpson, Ross Brody, Hugh Annandale, Ray Alp and Debbie Martin all on 13.

Simpson is still friendly with father time, 13 points was a marvellous effort from a gentleman who first played golf on this course 60 years ago.

Tuesday 6 September 2005 - Veterans & Leisure Day

Giving scant respect to a niggling hamstring injury, successfully diagnosed by former club member Doc Isabel, Des Hebb had a two shot win in vets with 27 points.

The consistent Peter Gray scored 25, Bryan Simpson 23, Jeff Crowe and Ray Alp 22.

Novelties: No 4, Des Hebb; No 6, Phil Warburton; No 9, Alf Sanford; No 18, Ray Alp.

The Chris's quinellaed leisure day - Chris Shea was first on 36 with Chris Bliss on 35.

There were eight players in the event.
