The 16th Hole

Men: 346m par 4, rated 2
Ladies: 300m par 4, rated 5

The 16th hole, Collie Golf Club, from the tee

The 16th is the first of three difficult closing holes, rated 2, 3 and 5 respectively.

With a gentle right dogleg ahead, the tee shot is played to a wide fairway. Aim left - the further right the ball flies, the more likely it is to end up in poor lies, trees, a ditch and out of bounds, in that order!

But a solid drive can also run into the trees on the left - a fade aimed at the 150m marker is the way to go.

The ladies' tee opens up the fairway nicely from 300m, making the process of avoiding the right hand side a little easier.

The right is to be avoided at all costs - even if the drive stays on the fairway - as it brings a ball- hungry pond into play.

The pond on the 16th hole

Although it can barely be seen through the trees, beautiful Minninup Pool on the Collie River runs alongside the 16th fairway, and consequently the fairway needs plenty of drainage.

The pond on the right of the fairway - or swamp, as members who have lost too many balls there prefer to call it - provides that drainage.

And plenty of headaches.

The raised green is long but hard to hold with a long iron approach.

Most danger is found in the trees, shrubs and drainage ditch behind the green - although most balls roll off to the right before they get the chance to roll off the back!
