The
8th Hole

The
8th
hole, a gentle left dogleg, has been described as one of Australia's top 100 golf holes,
and it is easy to see why - it is both picturesque,
running alongside the Collie River for the whole of its
length, and challenging.
|
|
The
tee shot is played to a wide fairway which slopes from
right to left.
The
right side is definitely the place to be, as even if the
drive lands a little off the fairway the slope may bring
it back down to the short stuff.
Drive
left, and the river comes into play if the trees and scrub
don't stop the ball first. Even if they do, your next
shot is generally a chip to the fairway, as trees block
out an approach to the green from the left. |

|

|
The
approach is also best played to the right. The slope of
the fairway increases towards the green, and shots which
look to be headed straight at the hole can be diverted
into the cavernous bunker to the left front of the green.
Most
members play their approach right of centre,
as the ball can bounce off a steep bank to the right of
the green, on to the putting surface. |
The
green slopes strongly down from right to left, and from
back to front, and any putt from behind the pin is
guaranteed to make even the most confident putter have a
moment of self doubt. Indeed, putting is a real challenge
from anywhere on the green.
However,
this is a lovely hole to play, and the setting of the
green, between the river and a beautiful garden, is
picture perfect. |
