The 5th Hole

Men: 396m par 4, rated 1
Ladies: 330m par 4, rated 6

The 5th hole, Collie Golf Club, from the tee

Due to its length, the downhill 396m, par 4, 5th hole is rated the most difficult hole on the course for men. For the ladies, teeing off 66m ahead, it is rated the sixth most difficult.

Making it more difficult for the men is that their teeing area is just a couple of metres from the verandah outside the bar. Of course, members on the verandah always have the decency to remain quiet while others are teeing off. Sometimes. Although comments like 'this is the man we've come to see', 'winner of three majors', and 'no pressure!' have been heard on occasion. Quite a lot, in fact.

The 5th could be described as a late and fairly gentle dogleg to the left, with a long and accurate drive to the right hand side of the fairway required to open up the corner.

Many members play the 5th via a booming slice to the 6th fairway, which runs parallel beyond a band of trees to the right of the 5th. Although this is rarely deliberate, it's not altogether a bad option.

The approach to the 5th green

A short tee shot, or a tee shot too far to the left, sees the green blocked or partly blocked by a huge tree on the dogleg corner.

This can make the second shot intimidatory, and in an effort to miss the tree it is easy to push the approach right into the trees, where every lie is extremely difficult.

The green is one of the smaller greens at Collie, with a view of the Collie River behind.

Although typically Collie, with significant undulations, it is not one of the harder greens to putt - although being small, with a sharp run off to the left, right and back, it is hard to hold with a long iron approach.
