The
3rd Hole
|
Men:
506m par 5, rated 4
Ladies: 365m par 5, rated 14 |
|
At
506m, the 3rd is the longest hole on the course, and one
of the prettiest, running its whole length along the
Collie River. A
double dogleg to the left, it is also justifiably rated
one of Collie's toughest holes - indeed, many members
believe it should be rated 1.
The
hard work starts on the tee, where bushy trees encroaching
to the left ensure that anything other than a draw is more
likely than not to end up among the trees on the right.
But
of course, if the draw turns into a hook, you're in the
river. |
|
However,
the 3rd is a far easier proposition from the ladies'
tee, 141m ahead of the men.
With
the river in the background, the tee shot for the ladies
should be played well to the right of the fairway, opening
up a view of the green past the second dogleg. |

|
|

|
For
men, two good shots are needed to clear the second dogleg,
and the second shot is always in danger of running through into
the heavy rough and sandy lies on the right, or being
caught in a strategically placed fairway trap.
But
pull the second left, and the river definitely comes into
play, with the reed covered river bank running sharply
away behind the big trees which mark the corner. |
|
The
approach is played through trees on either side to a big
green, well grassed all around. Most danger lies on the
right, and errant approach shots on that side will find
plenty of trees, bushes and sandy, leafy lies which often
necessitate a drop.
The
putting surface itself is moderately undulating, but not
particularly difficult. |
