The
2nd Hole
|
Men:
326m par 4, rated 6
Ladies: 285m par 4, rated 12 |
|
Despite it being a relatively short par 4, the 2nd hole is rated 6th
hardest on the course for good reason.
Play a perfect tee
shot, and it's a birdie opportunity.
Play a tee shot that
is less than perfect, and it's a horror hole.
|
|
Another
right dogleg, the drive has to be perfectly positioned on
the left side of the fairway, just inside the 150m marker.
Those
with cool heads leave the driver in the bag and play for
accuracy. Drive too long, or too straight, and the ball
will end up deep in trees on the left, or out of bounds,
bouncing 350 metres down Mungalup Road. |

|

|
But
play too short, or too far right, and the big tree on the
dogleg, above, blocks the approach shot. For most players
this means the green is impossible to reach with the
second shot - but it gets worse.
Precise judgement is
required to put the second shot far enough left to see the
green, but not so far left that it runs out of bounds into
Dead Duck Creek, just a metre or two off the fairway. |
|
The
Collie River forms a backdrop to the green, which can be
hard to hold with the approach shot - generally, if the
approach lands on the green it will run off the back,
often into thick riverside reeds which are very difficult
to play back from.
Drop
the approach short and let it run on, though, and the
green presents a reasonably easy putting surface. |
